I'm playing in my first tourney, Its a 100 player 960 tourney.  I started out playing 6 games.  How do you progress or get knocked out?  Can you loose 1 or 2 games and still continue/win?    thanx  Paul

The group size is 4.          2 players will advance to the next round.

You are in the 23rd group ... http://www.chess.com/tournaments/pairings.html?id=29720&round=1&page=2

You just have to get more points than two others in your group.

Assuming the first placed person wins ALL of their games, then the second placed person MUST have lost at least 2 games.

Thanx!!   I'm in a four person group playing 6 games.  Only two people advance, two people are eliminated per round.  I get it.......sweet.    Wink

The next round may be different! Smile

Since there SHOULD be 50 players in the 2nd round (and 50 is NOT a multiple of 4), the Tournament Director may decide to have a group size of 5 - and perhaps only 1 player will advance.

Equally, there may be MORE than 50 in the 2nd round. It's possible for 3 (or even 4) to advance from a group - if their scores (and tie-breaks) are even.

Alternatively, there may be LESS than 50 in the 2nd round: if people withdraw from the tournament.

The maximum group size remains the same throughout the tournament. The Tournament Director cannot change it.

An exception occurs, due to a bug, where the largest group size in the previous round becomes the maximum group size for the current round.

In this tournament the nominal maximum groups size was six players.  http://www.chess.com/tournament/the-fastest---iii

The largest group in round 4 was five players.  http://www.chess.com/tournaments/pairings.html?id=24977&round=4

Due to the bug the maximum group size in round 5 became five players so there were two groups of three players in round 5 rather than one group of six players.  http://www.chess.com/tournaments/pairings.html?id=24977&round=5
