I fully understand the reason for time since championships would last months, but this seems to be a serious draw back. I bet that this doesn't happen in reality, or it's very rare.

I've never played in a tournament, nor am I capable enough to do so, but I thought about this hypothetical and wanted to know how it works.
A player's time runs out when their next turn is mate. Do they win or lose? What about if the clock runs out as they're playing the move?
