How long do you have to prepare?
I recommend using the chess.com study plan:

That should strengthen your play considerably.

Think
Just think? Think about what in particular? Why don't you all give him help instead of insulting the way he presents his question.
He's trying to say he's in a competitive field for which he has a chance at winning. He's 954 against other players with a less than 1,000 rating. He's asking for general tips to advance his play.
Give him those tips instead of acting like jerks. Ask for his games or specific problems instead of dismissing him like the bunch of useless jesters so many in these forums become when a beginner asks for help, but not in the way they like.
Give him a very broad answer or review his games or stay out of his thread then.
edit: If you've got time to waste sparring with me or insulting others, why not make something of yourself, go to his game archive, and use your 2k mind to offer him advice instead of acting ridiculous and not answering his question....
Chesskid, like I posted in your other thread about the same topic just learn to keep the game simple for now. No need to wow everybody watching your games with flashy, fancy attacks & stuff. You don't have to crush your opponents. Get very solid in your endgames. Study that a lot at first. Do tactics every day too along with your dedication to your endgames. Keep it simple because if you focus on not giving your pieces away you can bet that under 1000 players will just give their pieces to you. Then trade everything & win the ending. That's why you have to study that early on. You'll get a lot of easy wins if you keep it simple & do that. A win still counts for 1 point whether it's a high risk, cute, flashy 15 move win or whether it's a very low risk, trade everything off after you win material, boring 70 move endgame win. I bet the players who are winning your sections are winning a lot off points in the ENDGAME. Just like most sections.

That's not a realistic objective. Go thinking only about next game.
Forget about trying to beat everyone. Focus on improving.
There is no simple formula that allows a player, at any level, to consistently beat other players at or near the same level. If there were, somebody else would already be doing it.
That said, I can summarize what you need to do. At the sub-1000 level, the game is not about grand strategy, it's about stupid blunders. Don't send your queen on a suicide mission. Don't forget to castle. Don't be afraid to make even trades. Use more than one piece at a time to launch an attack. Don't worry too much about what an opponent might do ten moves later; make your own plans. Don't try to replicate some "perfect opening." Focus on the basics, like not making losing trades. Trust that your opponent will make a big mistake; try to spot it. As preparation, study tactics using a tool like Tactics Trainer here on chess.com.
You can study all the theory in the world, but that won't help you if you drop your queen on the tenth move - which is what a sub-1000 player will usually do. Spend time doing tactics every day, and you'll be the one to notice when your opponent serves up his queen on a platter.
Edit: a little endgame practice won't hurt either, if you haven't done some already. Don't spend too much time on these yet, but you want to at least be able to recognize which endgames are easy, which are tricky, and which are impossible.
