Unrated player, first tournament questions

Hi, I just became a member of the USCF and i contacted my local chess club to see what events i could participate in. They said i am eligible for all the USCF events they have. One being an open, another just U1000, and the last one has from U2200 to U1400. What tournament should i play?

And if i play the U1000 and lose on of the rounds would my USCF rating be at a huge risk? I don't know how i would stack up to the competition because I've only played online and with friends before. any info would be appreciated, thanks.

But you are more likely to win in the U1000, losing to strong players still loses  your rating, but play where you think you belong too. Play where your live chess rating says. That's what I would do.;)

As far as your initial rating goes, if you want to see what will happen to it if certain things happen, try this site:

Put in "0" for "# of Prior Games" since you're unrated.  Then plug in the ratings of the players you might play, and in "Total Score" put the number of wins you think you'll get (draws count as 0.5 each.)

i feel like i should get my feet wet with the U1000, and chances are i will win all my games in that (probably all versus children), but if it turns out in my favor i can play the U1400 in a few weeks and really see how i stack up

maybe im underestimating U1000 players? i cant but help think destroy them

Well Im playing here online at 1200 level chess and I've played two tournaments so far.  Im an adult and have won games against other adults and lost against children.  Yes even a 6 year old lol.  So don't underestimate tournament play versus online.  They blunder a lot less in tournament play.

I forgot to mention I've only played since last september seriously so if you have more years then perhaps you could play higher.
