I tried to enter a USCF tourny this past weekend. I was torn because I also wanted to do a book signing at a local festival. I showed up at the tourny, after driving 1.5 hours, and asked if I could pay the entry fee and only play one game, then leave. (to go to my book signing) Both the director

That would be dumb... To lose rating points for getting a bye.

That would be such a rip-off to pay that much for one game, honestly not worth it IMO.

Way back in 1973 I played in the US Open in Chicago. I played 8 games out of the 12 and then had to drop out due to illness. There was no problem as I notified the tournament director by phone the night before game day #9.
