WNBA Champion Aerial Powers Holds Chess Workshop; New Playable Bot Out Now
Aerial Powers, WNBA Champion and co-owner of Team Liquid (who will be represented at the Esports World Cup this summer by GMs Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana), appeared with FM James Canty III and others at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio on April 17. The engaging discussion, hosted by Dr. Melita Moore of the Health-e-Gamer Foundation, explored the valuable life lessons in both chess and basketball, alongside the significant impact streaming and gaming has had on their careers.
Attendees also had the unique opportunity to play against Powers' new legacy bot in the Esports Foundry’s game arena. This innovative bot, out now on the first day of the WNBA season, marks a groundbreaking achievement, making Aerial the first woman athlete across all sports to have an official Chess.com bot. "Becoming the first woman athlete to have a bot on Chess.com is a deeply significant moment for me. It's not just about the game; it's about showing young women that there are no limits to our passions and capabilities," said Powers. "I hope this inspires them to explore new avenues, break down barriers, and see themselves represented in all spaces, from the court to the chessboard to the digital arena. This is for them."
Building on her innovative spirit, Aerial also unveiled "Powers Moves," a bold chess initiative with a global vision, created in partnership with GM Maurice Ashley and the Health-e-Gamer Foundation. This ambitious program is specifically designed to empower talented young girls from underrepresented communities, providing championship-minded mentorship and vital financial resources for high-quality coaching, competitive opportunities, and tournament entry. The core mission of Powers Moves is to cultivate the next generation of female chess champions, equipping these girls with the tools they need to excel both on the chessboard and in life. By directly addressing the financial barriers to competitive chess, Powers aims to propel more girls "into the game" and onto a path of mastery.
Attendees were also able to participate in a 10-board chess simul against both James and Aerial.

Aerial is a former standout at Michigan State University and was the fifth overall pick in the 2016 WNBA draft. She seamlessly blends her athletic prowess with her passion for gaming, frequently streaming on Twitch when she's not dominating on the basketball court.
