Sarana Wins Super Swiss, Qualifies For Speed Chess Championship

GM Alexey Sarana won the Super Swiss on Sunday. The 21-year-old grandmaster from Moscow earned $4,000 and qualified for the Main Event of the Chess.com Speed Chess Championship.

Sarana won a 16-player knockout tournament on Sunday after beating GM Hans Niemann (@HansonTwitch) 7.5-4.5 in the final. The winner had eliminated GM Nodirbek Yakkuboev (@hanzo_hasashi1) in the semifinals, GM Oleksandr Bortnyk (@Oleksandr_Bortnyk) in the quarterfinals, and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (@SaraBlackPanther) in the round of 16. All matches had a combination of 5|1, 3|1, and 1|1 games.

Assaubayeva had made it into the knockout after finishing in 17th place in the Swiss tournament on Saturday which was played to deliver the 16 participants for Sunday's bracket. That tournament consisted of 15 rounds of 3|0 games and was won by GM Hikaru Nakamura, who did not play on Sunday because he is already a participant in the Main Event.

Peter Doggers joined a chess club a month before turning 15 and still plays for it. He used to be an active tournament player and holds two IM norms.
