Chess.com Month In Review: January 2020

Hey chess fans! It's that time again! Let's take a moment to review what kept the Chess.com team busy in the first month of the year! Here is January 2020...

Puzzles

  • When watching a Puzzle Battle, you can review puzzles the players got wrong! Just hover on the ❌ to see the troublesome puzzle. If you click, it will bring that puzzle on to the active board where you can analyze it yourself. Return to the live action by clicking on the page background. Cool!
  • Made some changes to how hints work: The first click reveals the piece to move, the second, where to move it!

vs. Computer

  • Lots going on here! We continue to make small improvements to the current version, but we're also working hard on a completely new version of "vs. computer"... Stay tuned!

Other Stuff (Web)

  • We made it a little easier to follow the folks who create our articles and news:

  • Member status text is no longer italicized (because it made emoji look weird).
  • You can now filter your Game Archive by game result...

How did the game end?

  • Fixed a bug in which the Daily Puzzle was sometimes flipped the wrong way.
  • Added Dutch, Croatian, and Swedish ChessTV channels!
  • Continued to make minor interface improvements to site-wide chat.
  • In daily chess, KB vs KB is now claimable as a draw if the bishops are of opposite colors. Same for KNN vs K. (Both of these rules were already being applied in Live Chess.)
  • Daily Tournament Directors will now see a confirmation dialog when they try to start a daily Tournament.
  • The New Game modal now defaults to your last time control if your last game had a custom time control.
  • Improved several of our email templates (for outgoing system emails)
  • Made it easier to select which languages you want to include when viewing lists of Articles, Videos, and other content
  • Added browser notifications to the whole site! You can configure the events that create your alerts via the "Web" column in your notification settings.
  • Added "Learn Chess with Dr. Wolf" to our resources page! Check it out!
  • Fixed some errors sorting games in the archive which were occasionally creating confusion when 2+ games ended on the same day.
  • Added a new pop-up to mark the conclusion of live swiss tournaments.
  • Added functionality to allow you to explore the openings of a specific player in the master players database.

Explore Bent Larsen's opening play!
