This is a "No Vacation" tournament!

This is the official 2020 Chess.com Daily Chess Championship. Participants will play 22 games at one time (one as Black, one as White per opponent) at the time control of one day per move in 12-player sections. Please anticipate the challenging schedule; the timeout rate in this tournament is consistently high due to the demanding schedule. Only the section winner(s) advance.

This tournament is expected to complete late in 2020.

Opening databases and opening books are permitted in Daily Chess, but the use of engines and tablebases is never permitted. All section winners will be subjected to fair-play analysis.

Post your most interesting games in the comments #dailychess, and we'll publicize the best ones! Selected games win diamond.png!

Announcements

Congratulations to IM Uffe Vinther-Schou, the 2020 Daily Chess Champion!

SamCopeland | Dec 2, 2020, 1:27 PM

Congratulations to IM Uffe Vinther-Schou for his victory in the 2020 Daily Chess Championship! This was the largest tournament ever held on Chess.com. Triumphing over 16,000+ contestants is truly an outstanding achievement.

We have two final prizes to award, the $100 best game prizes for rounds 4 and 5. The winners are Égető János Lehel from Hungary for a spirited attack and our tournament champion for the challenging endgame he converted in the final match. Congrats to both!

We will soon have an announcement out for the 2021 Daily Chess Champion. Due to the anticipated scale of the event, we will for the first time include a requirement of having completed some games prior to the event. Hopefully the more experienced pool will see fewer timeouts and more games decided on the board.

Round 4 Best Game Winner: lehel1991

Round 5 Best Game Winner: IMUffeVinther-Schou

SamCopeland | May 17, 2020, 6:14 AM

Hello everyone! Round three of the Daily Chess Championship is now underway. Congratulations to all those who have made it thus far

Games started 3 hours ago, so you have about 21 hours left to make your first move before there are forfeits.

In the next couple of weeks, we'll award round two prizes for games, videos, and blogs so post your best candidates now if you haven't already.

First Round Prizes

SamCopeland | Mar 23, 2020, 7:30 AM

Hello everyone! We are awarding the remainder of our first-round prizes. We weren't able to find additional entrants for the video prizes so we awarded an extra blog and game prize as we had many entrants in those categories. Remember players that you can record a video analysis of your games and post on youtube to compete for a prize. Use #dailychess in your video description to make it easier to find for us.

2020 Daily Chess Championship: Round Two Starts Soon

SamCopeland | Feb 28, 2020, 3:32 PM

There are only seven games remaining in the current round of the 2020 Daily Chess Championship! Some may still continue for as much as a week or two, but it is likely that round two will begin soon and players who have won their section (or tied) and advanced to the next round should be ready to begin as soon as the final game concludes. Good luck!

First Round Prizes

Hello everyone! There's still ~100 games left in round one, but we wanted to award half of our first-round prizes, two each for our categories! They are...

An FAQ: We've heard some questions about when the next round will start. It should be when all games that affect the section winners are done. Only the winner advances, but in the case of a tie, all tied players advance.

2020 Daily Chess Championship: DON'T MISS NOTIFICATIONS

SamCopeland | Dec 31, 2019, 5:32 AM

Hi everyone The 2020 Daily Chess Championship will be starting tomorrow, and we are excited to have our largest attendance ever!

We want to remind everyone that this is a very challenging event with 22 games starting concurrently, and NO VACATION TIME. Many players have timed out in the past, and we definitely want to avoid that. Consider checking your daily chess notification settings here (https://www.chess.com/settings/notifications) to make sure that you are getting notifications for daily moves. It may also make sense to set a daily personal reminder at a suitable time to make sure that you login and make your moves.

There will be some delays as we get all the games started on January 1st (It takes the server some time to launch over 100,000 games!), but we should have all games started by the end of the day.

If this event is sounding like it may be too much after all, you can "withdraw" in the upper right of the tournament page.
