Upon the Threshold (of Mediocrity)

artfizz | Aug 30, 2008, 1:09 AM

The tournament is over. Thanks to you all for playing so sportingly.

  • blitzberg didn't go home empty-handed. He not pulled off the biggest upset. He also ended up with one of the largest improvements in ratings from start to finish.
  • saboegel defended his honour magnificently by winning his final game against the eventual winner.
  • The less said about artfizz’s performance the better.
  • dommo refused to be intimidated – and achieved wins or draws against everybody (except himself).
  • EagleHeart collected 23 tournament points in securing 3rd place. Well done!
  • scribblepunk tied his score with the winner. In being held to 2nd place, only the tie-break mechanism marked him down. An excellent performance!
  • Lastly, but no means in last place: the WINNER of the Threshold of Mediocrity tournament – all the way from Australia – rooboy166 ! A tremendous performance , rooboy166. CONGRATULATIONS!

May I finally say what a pleasure and a privilege it has been playing against you all. I wish you continued fun – and success – in chess. Let’s play chess!

STOP PRESS: Threshold crossed

artfizz | Aug 8, 2008, 9:39 AM

Contrary again to what I said last time, ONE PLAYER has now crossed the 1550 threshold. Congratulations to Eagleheart!
There are now only 2 games remaining (there were 3; I've had the Pairings Table explained to me!)
rooboy166 has established an unassailable lead (so we should all resign - just joking!)
Saboegel's final game can't change his position - he has only honour to fight for.
A win for Dommo, by contrast, would push ArtFizz - the organiser of this tournament - further down the placements. It is to be hoped he will consider his actions very carefully if he ever expects to enter another such tournament.
An anticipatory well-done to Scribblepunk and Eagleheart for their 2nd and 3rd placings respectively. I enjoyed a closely fought draw against Blitzberg.
Keep up the great games!

Threshold NOT YET crossed!

artfizz | Aug 4, 2008, 2:34 AM

Scribblepunk has seized the lead from Eagleheart! There are only either 6 games remaining or 3 games remaining - depending upon whether you believe the Pairings Table or the Tournament Stats. If it is 6, then every player has an opportunity to change his position in the table - or have it changed!

Contrary to what I said last time, NO PLAYER has yet crossed the 1550 threshold; certainly not ArtFizz - who is closer to 1450!  Eagleheart is tantalisingly close to the threshold though.  Keep up the great games!

in sight of the finish

artfizz | Aug 2, 2008, 2:18 PM

So far, only one player is over the 1550 threshold (me!) - albeit only temporarily. No-one has won all their games - no-one has lost them all. A well-balanced field. EagleHeart is leading the charge, Scribblepunk chasing him all the way, and rooboy166 - the dark horse* to watch as we approach the final furlong.

* A completely different tournament.
