Games in 2011 NSW Open

This event was a seven round affair over in Parramatta. There was 90 minutes for each player with a 30 second increment. There was to be 2 games played on the first day, 3 on the second and 2 on the third and last day. The weather was pretty dismal but in the playing hall a good time was had by all and there were plenty of memorable games. I thought I may as well post up my games because a few of them were pretty exciting!

In the first round my opponent didn't actually turn up so, with another player who opponent also didn't turn up, we had the option of taking a full point by default or else re-pairing with each other and duking it out. We chose to play because we didn't come out all that way for nothing! In fact, I believe my opponent came from interstate.

In the next game I was crushed by a younger player who was from interstate. I think I made the error of not taking him as seriously as I should have because his rating was quite average. I was humbled and learned my lesson.
Ok, now for the second day of the tournament and here my luck turned around and I achieved three victories. To be honest I overlooked a tactic in the next game here and was worse, but I had a bit of a fortress happening and it wasn't so easy for my opponent to break through. He was a little kid too so it felt quite embarassing to miss the tactic but then again, little kids are awesome at tactics with their fresh minds. I just need to be more careful. Anyway, a passed pawn in this one made life very uneasy for my opponent as the game progressed.
Ok, here is the second game from day two and it was another Sicilian so maybe I can redeem myself for the debacle the previous day.
Ok, here is the evening game of day two. I was playing Black and it was an open Ruy Lopez. It was a close game but eventually I managed to liquidate into a superior ending.
Day three, and there are two games left to play. The first game was against quite an experienced campaigner and I knew I would have my work cut out for me. I was playing White and it was another Sicilian. My opponent played what seemed to be quite an early Qa5 and a kind of position that I haven't seen before was the result.
Now for the final round of the tournament. I was on 4.5 out of 6 so far and 5.5 out of 7 would probably be enough for a prize of some kind. However, I was paired up against a very strong player almost of Fide master strength. This would not be easy but I was glad to at least get some experience against a master level adversary. He had all the fun in this game however...:)
In the end I finished on 4.5 out of 7 and obtained some valuable experience. Hopefully I'll be back next year!
