My dad taught me chess when little. I srarted getting better than him,so one day the board and pieces flew across the room, and that was the end of the lessons!

my dad taught me chess, with the fool's mate, I must have been 6-8 years old. I picked it up really quick. several years later my evil stepmother's brother, who wasn't a bad guy I should add, was talking big about chess and checkers. I was a nerdy chubby boy of 12 years, and I challenged him to chess, which according to him was a "man's game", unlike checkers which was for children. Would you believe I beat him?? He must have been furious, because I know how emotional i can get when the chess board isn't working my way! I never really played chess again after that, sadly, until last year.

My parents taught me.  They both knew how to play but didn't know much strategy and I could beat them both from a pretty early age.  Not that I am some kind of chess prodigy.. i'm not even very good.

I taught myself. I learned the how to move and took it from there. I am just now starting to study openings and what-not. Always did it unorthodox.. Me and a buddy introduced it to our highschool. By junior year we had a group of about 10 people playing it. That was 11+ years ago and I still suck :p

My older brother taught me the rules of chess, and he always beat me 9 out of 10 times. We always started by moving the a and h pawns two squares up followed by the rooks to the 3rd or 6th rank.

Then on a holiday with my uncle, he taught me about piece value and center control in the opening, and when I returned home to my brother it was me who beated him 9 out of 10 times.

Lol phumpkins, thats how i started out moving the rooks out rightaway. After a few months i either had to take a queen or two rooks off the board when playing with siblings, and i still won pretty often.

My dad (of course) taught me the basics and a little bit of strategy, and by age 10 I could beat him once in a while (he didn't like that :)) ...then I didn't play much for the next 25 years, until 3 years ago I just decided, "I want to get good at chess!".  Since then, my teachers have been guys like Lasker, Capablanca, Karpov (I've always gravitated to the "positional" masters), and Eric Schiller, whose book World Champion Openings is simultaneously feeding me valuable new ideas, and confusing the heck out of me!

I was around 7 when my dad sold me to a slaver. The guy had an old mansion surrounded by high walls. During night time, I had to sneak by two of his guards (who was guarding his daughter's bedroom) to play chess with her. And when he found out I was mating his only girl (in chess), eight men gave me a lot of beating, then they sent me in the attic. There i found a chessboard, and a book titled "How to Mate". It taught me how to play chess openings, tactics, strategies and endgames. And I used all the things i've learned for my escape. I jumped off the balcony of the third floor to reach the other side of the wall. I ran straight to the stables and stole a horse. It was a well-executed plan.

My dad taught me when I was 7 or 8, I think.  I can't remember how quickly I learned the game or even my first win, but I started playing at my elementary school and quickly become the strongest player there, I had some nice tourney results when I was young too(took 5th in Wisconsin state tournament JV section when I was 9 years old).  Wish I didn't give up chess in middleschool/high school.

My computer (Apple IIGS) taught me when I was 31 years old, back in 1988 with the program (Chessmaster 2100). I've been told by several people that I play like a computer...

Chess was an integral component of the royal court in Baghdad. I learned by watching other play while I was a musician there. I honed my skills during my travels after expulsion, and knew the game well enough to introduce it at court in Cordoba.

My dad, who was a very strong amateur, teached me when I was nine, or so. I started studying chess by my own at 13, and became Candidate Master at my very first tournament- which means that even an idiot can play well when studying.

Now this is impossible?
