  • currently range between 1000-1100 and would love any feedback that would help me advance, thanks!

Nice knight bait at the end. You got real lucky that you were given time to castle on move 20 - your queen should have been pinned. I think 15 ...d5 was a mistake. He can just take it, giving himself an open file.

thanks for the feedback. i know its all relative but is castling on move 20 generally a bit late?

Creg

It's extremely late in this case. You should have been crushed on move 19 after you played 18...Bb4??. Your opponent could have played 19. Nf6+ winning your queen.

As a general rule, you want to move your knights and bishops off the back rank as fast as possible.   As a side effect, this gives you the option to castle, usually within about six moves.  By move 10 you should have a good idea whether and on which side you want/need to castle, though sometimes it's useful to keep your opponent guessing a bit longer, especially if you have the option of castling to either side.  In the game above it's clear to me by move 13 that the center is going to open up, leaving your king vulnerable if he stays in the middle.  (Your move 15 was a mistake because it sped up that process and also because it hung a pawn at the same time.)  In that light, you should have thought twice about 8. ...c5, which leaves a yawning chasm in your queenside pawns (taking away any realistic option of castling long).  However, pawn structure and the timing of castling are relatively subtle and often debatable, and not important compared to instantly-game-deciding threats like you faced on move 18 (which luckily your opponent also failed to see) where your queen could have been pinned to your king.

thanks everyone for the feedback, really helps getting insight from others

Far too many tactical mistakes. You are developing too many bad habits by playing games against this level of opponent. Start studying more and stop playing games often.

puddingass34: Keep studying and practice. It takes time, but you will eventually see improvement. I played games just like this when I first started over 20 years ago. I just kept plugging away. Over time, my game got better.

Lol, thanks for the encouragement. I do think studying more is definitely needed, however practice does make perfect, so agreed on both sides i think
