Those of you that like to just see the game there it is above.

This post is to show how I go about thinking while I play a game of Chess. I created all the diagrams using a the cheap PAINT program that come in a computers. I highlited the latest move in RED. If you find an error please let me know on which move it is.

This project took me about 72 hours and my hands hurt from typing. But I enjoyed it.

The following is what I think about as I play a chess game.

Playing for the Geezer Group . . .

First Opponent vs. Denver rating 1220 after the game. . .

1.   E4.

I like that move for White and so did Fischer.

He said, "It is Best by Test."

. . .   e5.

I dislike Black, standard opening move, hope he doesn't do anything strange.

2.   d3.

Hmm . . He blocked his white bishop in. He should have moved his knights out first.   It's a passive opening?

I've seen this opening before. Don't know the name though.

. . .  Bc5.

My Bishop IS aiming at F2 the weak square. He surely won't allow a easy mate.

3.   Qd2.

Goodness, another strange move, blocking his other bishop in. He should have developed a piece.

. . .   Nf6.

"Knight out before the Bishops," it is said. Wonder what's next? Where is he going?

4.   Nf3.

Finally a normal developing move, attacking my E pawn.

. . .   Nc6.

I'm defending E pawn and developing my second Knight.

5.   Nh4.

Hmm . . . Moved to the edge of the board? "Knight is Grim on the edge," some master said.  Back in the olden days it was an accepted move.

. . .  Ng4

I have three pieces developed. Aiming at f2. My Queen is ready to assist @ QF6. I wonder if he see's the possible check? F2 is always the weak square. I can take the H4 Knight if he leaves it there. After I check w/ Bishop.

 6.   Nf5.

He only has a knight out and he's going to take my G7 pawn check me. I would have to move my king. I'd like to castle, he would break up my pawn structure. His Queen and Bishop are directed to the H6. It could develop to an attack.

. . .    Bxf2+.

I beat him to the check. I took the pawn he can't castle. I don't think he likes to castle anyway.  I want to keep his king in the middle.  I need to open up some files for my rooks to get to his King.  I need more pieces to attack.

7.   Ke2.

He moved forward?  I thought he would move to D1. Both bishops are locked in.  Only his Knight and Queen are available.  Have to keep up the pressure.

. . .   Nd4+ check.

If he moves 8. Nxd4, I will Bxd5 taking his only piece out. If he retreats to D1 he's in a stalemate position. He doesn't seem to make logical or expected moves.  I would have to find some way to check him.

I could take the annoying knight. 8. . . Nxf5 he would probably take my knight with 8. ExF5, and then I could move my pawn 9. D5 opening up the white bishop on D8. To get my bishop out to take pawn on F5 and castle on Kingside and bring my rook to the E file.  Maybe I am thinking to far ahead.

8.   Kd1.

His King is in a stalemate position.  If I could check him, it would be mate.  I could check him on E3 with my Knight, but I would lose him. He could take it with his knight.

I could attack his Queen with Be3 but he would take it with his knight, and If I take with my bishop, I would lose that also. He would take it with his Queen.

I can't find a way so I will get rid of that annoying Knight and leave my pieces alone where they are.

. . .   NxF5.

I took the Knight.  Wonder if he will take the knight with the pawn.  I can't depend on him to make reasonable responding moves.

9.   Exf5.

He made a normal response.  I was hoping he'd an unexpected move.

Now, if I make the D5 move he would move his queen to B4 and preventing me from castling and attacking my unprotected knight on G4.

. . .   D6.

I dislike making passive moves in a game. I had to move the pawn to open up my bishop attack on F4 pawn.

Now, next move I can take the pawn free with my bishop and develop it at the same time.

10.   D4.

He is attacking the center pawn.  I could take the pawn with my E pawn and he could take it back with the Queen. Wrong, my bishop would take the queen.  So he has a check, it is worthless and the other we might ex-change Queens. I don't want that right now, I like my Queen.

. . .   Bxd4.

Better to take the free pawn backwards with the Bishop and I need more pieces to continue attacking.

11.   Na3.

Here comes the other knight to the edge, probably coming to the support of the center. Better Check the king and castle mine.

. . .   Ne3+

He has two choices one blocks his bishop again.

12.   Ke2.

Goodness, he blocked his bishop again. Good choice for me. It gives me time.

I keep glancing at the Knight moving to C4 or B5. I'm tempted to move my pawns to C6 and D5 to contain the White Knight.

Well, not right now.

. . .   0 – 0

I had to castled into safety. A passive move, I wasn't in danger, but I want to bring my Rook to the center files where his King is. I want to introduce my Rook to his King if I can.

13.   QD3.

Forward she comes opens up the bishop on C1.

If I take pawn with BF5, I'm protected by my Knight and I attack the Queen.

Then has only three squares to move the queen safely. D2,  B3 or B5 which looks at my B7 pawn.

Let's see if I can find another move and develop. I have to take that pawn, develop, and attack at the same time.

. . .    BxF5.

To many choices. I Can't go depend on his moves, because he isn't predictable. His Queen has to move to: QD2, QB3 or QB5. Or maybe he will let me take the Queen?

14.   QB3.

His Queen eyes are on my B7 pawn. Nothing there since my Rooks are connected.

. . .   Bg4+.

Check! I want to get rid of the Rook for a piece maybe.

15.  KD3.

He moves the King out again. This White King is dancing a lot.

I want to fork the Rook with a check at the same time.

. . .   ND1.

Getting ready for the fork on F2 and check. Hope the doesn't do anything foolish.

16.  BE2.

Finally he moved a piece out. Attacking my Bishop on G4. I still want his Rook for the Bishop.

. . .   NF2+.

Check!

Knight has a fork on the Rook.

17.       KD2.

    Retreats the King again.

. . .   NxH1. I took the Rook.

18.  BxG4.

Bishop took my Bishop. That's the swap I wanted.

I should get another piece also.

 . . .   QG5+.

Check and at the same time threatening his Bishop of G4.

Now it depends where he is going to move the King. I can check with the Knight, Bishop, Queen

          or  even a pawn.

I really don't have a plan on how to mate him. I just have a feeling. I would like to get rid of some of my  pawns so I can bring my Rooks into Play.

19.  KD3.

He moved the King out again. I better take my Knight back into the Frey and check him and take the bishop.

. . .   NF2+.

Check and then take the Bishop with the Queen or Knight.

20.  KE2.

I was hoping he would move forward to C4,I would check him with my D pawn, hoping he would take it. Then I would check him with my Rook on F8. If he didn't take the pawn he had to run toward my pawns. I would swarm him.

. . .  QxG4+. Check.

If he retreats to E1, then it's mate with my Queen on D1#. He probably will block with the Queen. I will push my pawn to F5. Hoping he will take the Queen with his Queen.

I would take his Queen with my F pawn opening my Rook F file and I can utilize the Rooks. I still would be up a piece and three pawns. He went away again.

21.QF3.

He blocked it with his Queen.

Now I should push my F pawn and he takes the Queen with his Queen.

That's no good. Wait. Let me try another check on E4.

He could block it with the Queen or the Bishop but he would take with his queen.

That would let him take out the Bishop and we would exchange pieces.

That would be the end of my attack for now. No, don't like that.

I should push my F pawn supported by my Rook.

Let's look at something else.

If I take Queen with my Queen Check. He could take it with the King or the B pawn.

Then I could push my E pawn.

If he brings out the Bishop to E3, I can take the pawn on B2 with my Bishop,

He would move his Rook and I would take his Knight on A3.

He would take my Knight on F2.

I'd gain a pawn. He would have a   rook, a bishop, and four pawns un-conected.

Against my two Rooks, a bishop and my seven connected pawns for the end game.

That doesn't sound too bad.

If I exchange even, I'll have Rook, three pawns against a king for the end game.

. . .   QxF3+

Let's see what he does. I should have pushed the F pawn. Oh, well. Oh my god he moved!

22.       KxF3.

He took the Queen with the King. His King has his swords out and attacks.

Have to push a pawn, keep checking. Don't let him breathe.

. . .   E4+.

Pushed the E pawn and Checked him. Keep him defending and not moving any of his pieces out.

Oops. Waiting three day for him to move  . . . Two days . . . Now it's waiting into hours . . .

I'm so impatient. Now. I learned to wait.

He could retreat to E2 or F4 or G3 and to hide his King behind the two pawns.

I have to wait to see what he does.

This will be some end game maybe not if I can help it.

23.       KF4.

The King is moving to the middle of the board..

Maybe I should push the E pawn and make a new Queen!

Other choices are,: move the Rook on A8 to the E file and support the passed pawn.

Or move the F pawn up to support the passed E pawn.

I am taking my time. I will make him wait for my move since I am in San Diego.

10 hours left and I made my move.

. . .   Rae8.

I moved my A8 Rook to support the E pawn and push it up.

Also make room for move possibilities to attack his King. Bringing in more help.

24.       NB5.

No waiting, he moved within minutes. Wow! He moved his Knight and is  attacking my Bishop, that is so strong in the middle of the board.

The Bishop is holding his king on the right quadrant.

I will try a silly move and see if he bites and takes this poison pawn I'm giving him.

If he doesn't, I will move my bishop, check him with it or retreat him to B6.

I have to keep his Bishop at home

. . .   G5+. Check!

Moved my G pawn and checked him.

          It's a poison pawn.

It's really an in between move. The real move is to save my Bishop.

He didn't wait. He took it immediately.

25.Kxg5.

No waiting again. My goodness he took the poison pawn.

. . .   Re5+.

He's in check with my Rook that is also attacking the Knight.

If he moves any square toward my king It's mate him in one move NG5+.

If he moves toward his men, I will take the knight.

I would like him to move to F4, If  he  tries to swap the bishops on E3.

Then, I have more combinations and I can even force him with a bishop check toward my men.

Then I have a mate in three.

I like the fact that my pieces and E pawn are safe and supported.

If he moves to H4 then it's a longer end game.

I could push the E pawn and Queen it or try to put the other Rook on the G file.

I could attack the B pawn with my bishop supported by my Rook.

26.  KF4.

He moved taking a safe square. I like him there.

. . .   RxB5.

          Took his Knight Free.

          I didn't want the Knight.

          I want a mate.

27.  BD2.

Finally, he moved his Bishop out, freeing his Rook.

              I have Three plans.

I'm tempted to take the B2 with my rook and it would be on the 7th rank.

He probably would move his Rook and cover the C pawn. I could take the A pawn.

If I took it with the bishop, it forces him to move the Rook. No, he wouldn't fall and put it on B1 then I would have a check and take the Rook Free.

Let's look at attacking the King and maybe a mating attack someway.

How about pushing my F pawn to F5, then checking him with the Bishop. If he retreats, push the F+ check. Supported by my F Rook. He would take my E pawn.

Let him put his Rook wherever he wants. If he places it on E1 it would be covering my Queening pawn and stuck defending. I like my net around the king. If he moves toward my King, I can check with the bishop maybe a mate.

I like this the best. I won't be greedy and start eating pawns. I feel a mate is around here somewhere.

I will wait until morning to make my move. Even though I want to make my move now.

Relax, patience, wait, go to sleep. After all it's three in the morning here in San Diego.

I will put my Rook on E8 and push the pawn. No, push the pawn will be the last choice for me.

Some grand master said, "Push a passed pawn."

I can't wait anymore. I went conservative with my first move.

. . .   RE8.

Moved my Rook I see a possible mate in five. Not a forced mate yet.

If I have to will push the pawn and maybe we will trade two pieces, I will give him the E pawn.

I will have a King, Rook, one piece, and 6 pawns.

He will have a King and five pawns at home.

28.  RF1.

Moved his Rook behind my Knight on F2.

. . .  RE6.

          I didn't wait I moved immediately.

         I see two mates.

         If nothing major changes.

If he takes my Knight he loses the Rook.

He needs to move his King to support the taking of the Knight.

Here are the two mates I see.

If he moves anything without taking anything,

other than the his H pawn or Bishop to E3.

Then it will be a forced mate.

          . . .  F6+  29. KG3   RG3+  30. KH4  RG4# mate.

          OR . . . F6+   29. KF4    RG4# Mate.

He can prolong mate one move by blocking the G3 check with his bishop.

Moving his King to G3 to support the taking of my knight. Then it's mate in Two.

29.  C3.

He attacks my Bishop with his C pawn. I have to ignore that.

  . . .  RF6+.

Now it will be forced mate as follow.

. . .  F6+  30. KG3   RG6+  31. KH4  RG4# mate.

   31. KF4    RG4# Mate.

He can prolong mate one move by blocking the G6+ check by blocking with the bishop.

30.      KG3.

. . .  RG6+.  Check

31.       KH4.

. . .  RG4 # checkmate.

If the King moved to F4 mate would be given by the rook on G4.

I hope you got something out of this. I know that I did. I had never written down all my

thoughts about possible moves in a game.

I think I checked him 13 times. I don't know if that is good or bad.

I know that I am not your chess instructor and there are many on this Chess. com site.

If anything, you can see in this game that the King left in the Center it is very vulnerable.

Castle if you can. Specially if the center pawn on your side are gone. I actually didn't want

         to  have all the pawns.

I tried to give some of them back so my pieces had room to move around.

Before you decide on a move to make. Make it in your head or on a small chess board where ever you are. Then look to see if it is a blunder and what your opponent is going to do to you, because you made the move.

Once the move is made there is no taking it back. In my game I made one move and I wrote. "Oh, Well." I hoped for the best.

I hope this actually helped the lower players how to look and think about the moves.

I don't even know how other players go about thinking, this is just my way. Now, I like writing the moves in word and my thoughts just as well. If I can't decide which is the best course of action. I wait another day. It actually helps to make a decision.

My rating went up 1220 after this game was over.

Thank you in advance if you read it all.

Monday October 21, 2019 . . .

I started putting back the missing diagrams i created for each move . . .

I will take me a little while to get them all in . . .

i created one for each move, so that is about 62 of them . . .

Patience is a virtue for me . . .

                   Comments are appreciated.

Congrats on your win. I enjoyed your diagrams.

Next time, leave your comments in the chess.com diagram : you will save much time !

As for the game, you could have played better at some points, but you always kept a winning position after the opening foolish moves from White.

What was the time control on this game?

After 14.Qb3, 14...Qg5 is a much stronger move.

If you would like to know more please let me know.

TonyH

In the post you can click on the small chessboard icon , enter game and thenmake notes on each move. The reason you didnt get many comments is that your post is really really long and hard to follow.
You did well on some things but there are some basic patterns you are missing out on. overall you did well and followed some basic principles and didnt move too fast and overlook simple captures.

GreenIsland

Thanks - really interesting commentary

Hi and thanks for the comment. I did forget to add the time. It was my first game ever on a team so I am a rookie.

It was three days and two games. One game after the other. I am playing the second game now as white.

I just looked at 14. . . . Qg5 I didn't even considered that during the game.

I was trying to keep him from moving any of his piece that were at the home positions. If I had made that Queen move then on his 16 move he could have swapped his bishop for my Knight. That Knight was one of the pieces that helped to contain the king and mate him.

Then his A1 Rook could have places to move and he needed support for his King. I played to contain him

This was an actual exercise for me and a lesson maybe for lower level players. As I put reasons why I do things.

I have looked at many games in chess.com diagrams and I find that I look at the games and not so much at the notes.

I made the starting notes on a post like this one. But I was told not to do that, that it was not allowed. So I made my notes on Word and later made the 60 diagrams.  Later I went back and put the red around the current moves. I actually loved doing that.

I am going to post this on my own Web page as a memoir.

I am playing a game right now with this fellow and making my notes on Word. I tried the small notes box but I don't care for it as I cannot print it out.

MehranHassan:

I'm glad you like them. I actually got better and faster at making the diagrams.

Here is the link to the other current game.

By the way, what is a conditional move?

How does that work?  Thanks.

TonyH

I woudl download A pgn file handler Chessbase and ChessAssistant are two good ones and there is SCID thats free (theres an updated version online if you do a search it will probably pop up) you can highlight and manipulate things much more easily than in word.

Thanks so much for the information, I will do that.

I just looked and you are correct, I could have taken it with a Knight Nf2+ and Nxh1.

I was more concerned with castling and getting my Rooks connected and out. It was the right time for it.

Thanks for actually looking at the game. . .

A conditional move here is where player x inputs a possible move of yours say 1.e4 and then his responce say e5

this can be really useful if you have a forced mate or something.

HI JETFIGHTER!

Thanks for the explanation. This was my first game ever on a team. Let's see if I understand what you said.

After move 29. c3  in above game, I knew I had a mate.

. . .  F6+  30. KG3   RG6+  31. KH4  RG4# mate.

What would I put in the conditional move since I knew there was a forced mate?

What is the purpose of it?

To have him resign?

Well, with all of those K moves, I sorta thought I was watching a bongcloud game. Then I got dizzy. Keep up the good work.

Hi e4nf3

It was puzzling to me that I almost had the king in a stalemate position, but I could not get that extra check to checkmate the King. That is my game with so many checks. I had a feeling I could mate him but it was hard to find it.

Thanks for the comment.

there is a tab called Conditional moves.

click it.

it then says make opponets move. one collumn is if the other is then

the then is your move

you make his move. then your responce.

it is to speed up the game through predictable parts (I actually heard some one used it against a Centaur (strong engine + human) and put in like a 40 move queen trap in the Najdorf in Conditional moves, and three weeks later the opponent resigned) so if you have a feeling what your opponent will play, then use it.

beware make sure the line is either best play or forced. or both.

Pawnpusher3

Well what is interesting is instead of Nh4, Nxe5 with the center fork trick for white. I think this would be good, because white would get a huge center and easy piece play out of it. I didn't look through the whole game yet, but it is just what I see right away. It isn't winning, just an improvement. Always be aware of that :)

Hi Pawnpusher.

I just now saw that possibility he had, but I was playing Black.

I didn't even consider that.

Actually if he taken the pawn with his knight.

I would have taken the Knight with my Knight.

So far he is ahead a pawn and lost a Knight.

Black pushes the D pawn for the fork.

I retreat my Bishop and he gains a Knight back.

I take the E pawn attacking his queen. I gain my pawn.

So the exchange would have been even.

Thanks for the comment. I missed that combination.

I have to stay more alert.
