Hey chess.com people! So, I used to go to this club in San Francisco called the Mechanics' Chess Club. It's really old
(description can be found here http://www.chess.com/club/mechanics-institute-chess-club). It's on the fourth floor of this HUGE building. It has circular stairs and all, so I, being weird, liked to take the circular stairs all the way up, for fun. I remember, in between rounds, run all the way to the 9th floor and then race my friend all the way down to floor 1. I could only do it once until that person at the front desk told us to stop. But it was fun while it lasted :) Anyway, when I was 1200 all the way until 1600 I would regularly attend their G/45 tournamnents because it would give me great competition! There were no sections and only 30 or so people ranging from unrated to the top seed, 2400, sometimes even a 2500! So I gained a lot of experience there. But I started to lose on time a lot there, so I stopped going for around a year. Then I heard about these chess tournaments, composed of one game every Tuesday night. At first, it was hard to do because of schoolwork. But now that school is off I can finally go! See, one problem about other tournaments, like Vegas and Reno, is that I tend to start quite strong, but then fatigue and lack of sleep gets to me in the end, and I get my first loss, or my first draw. Then it goes downhill from there. But with one game a week, who knows how well I'll do without fatigue or stress? Sure, I might not be in tournament mode every single game, but I thought it was a good shot. There was pretty good competition there. So I decided to try it out. Since San Francisco is quite far from my home, I had to take the train almost every week, so it was adding up to a lot of money. But I tried it the first time for experience.
I have to admit, it was a great experience. There was only a slight pairing problem: I would either get someone really strong or really weak! I would definitely recommend accelerated pairings.
For the first round I took a half point bye because I couldn't go. The next week school was ending, so I could go.
For round 2 I played a 1450 who gave me a clear advantage by move 5. Then after a blunder by him the rest was easy. Here's the game (note my rating was what it was at the time)
So that was a pretty easy game. The next week for round 3, I was surprised to play the #2 in my section, IM Elliott Winslow. He's been around for many years. Lucky me!
Even though I lost pretty badly I had a good experience! Here's the game:
So, I got to analyze the game with him, and it was very helpful.
For round 3 I played a 1571 who crumbled right out of the opening. Here's the game:
I couldn't go over the game, since there were people at the airport to pick up.
Next week for round 4, I played a 1668. Actually, I was supposed to play a 1715 but he was sick, so this was not an extra game, this was a repairing. This person actually played quite well! He got an advantage out of the opening and I had to work to develop an attack on the kingside, and I eventually broke through. Here's the game:
