A TALLY OF DATABASE-USERS & NON-USERS

I'll even shy away from the idea of "inflated"

(or, lol, the converse... deflated rating? now that's a chess joke, eh:

"Yeah, I'm only rated 1325 but my rating is really deflated right now." Hehe!

But anyways, all I was asking about was the way your rating would plateau without using those other means. I bet if I never took advantage of those things I couldn't get higher than, say, 1650, if that.

Like, the only way I could ever surpass 1700 would be by using those means.

I think the non-users are sad about the fact that if you want to have even a mildly respectable rating you have to become a user. If you continue to neglect to take advantage of the tools you're legally allowed to, you'll languish in the 1300-1500 range. Again, we can't really complain, because it's our laziness/stubborness whatever that means we prefer not to, but still.

/I'm making that my status: "My rating is just deflated right now."

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Why don't we just call it like it is: When you use the tools, your playing strength goes up. The rating is just a measurement of that.

i have got to 2000 without using ANY help, and i could get higher if i did use databases and used game explorerfor my openings, but i dont see the point? i really do look forward to checking my games with game explorer AFTER the game has finished, to see how far i played correctly, aand to see where i went wrong in the opening. SDoi still learn from my games using help, but only AFTER the game has finished :-)

That's cool. I always kindof wished I had fritz for post game analysis. Maybe it's a case of sour grapes from where I stand.

I had this thought as I went to buy sushi (6 Spicy tuna rolls and 6 salmon sashimi, oh yes) - I imagined some kind of like, pilots chair or bridge of the Enterprise set up with the ideal chess arrangement of data and stuff. Console with endgame tablebase displays and opening explorer and analysis board. Like, every utility at your fingertips, the ultimate chess machine.

It'd be sweet to play chess like Kirk in the Command chair, Mr. Spock bent over his scanner, reporting to you about the next move in standard opening theory. Actually, I'd love to hear Leonard Nimoy say something like "transposes into the Nimsowich variation" or something.

Never have even looked at one! Maybe I should.

Hahhaha yes.

User.

I have been playing correspondence chess [by post and the occasional telegram] since the 1970s. Any reference was allowed as long as it might be fallible [databases do not have perfect games - who knows what IS a perfect game, since chess is not solved yet?].

I see no reason to believe that anything has happened to change that.

I don't use tablebases since they are not allowed; and since they are infallible.

[except of course in centaur correspondence chess
(ie corr chess with human+engine+tablebases+...) e.g. at ficgs or iccf]

non User... since I've never used one, or have any idea how to use databases.... is that a bad thing?

If you use the analysis board, you are a user within the terms of this discussion!

I hope we won't have to go back and do a recount! MainStreet's initial posting didn't make it explicit that the Analysis Board constituted 'outside help'.

I'm using COT guidelines as a basis for what is and isn't considered outside help.

I wonder what guidelines everyone else is using! Perhaps that needs a separate tally. It's a bit late in the day, but could you post a link to the COT guidelines please?

Strange. It is number 137 and has appeared before a post that was here several hours ago.

It WAS post #138 at one point. Now it's #137. I deduce that one earlier post caused a glitch and has been erased. If so, the key issue will be: was it a User or a Non-User?

MainStreet

It's interesting to note that "some" Users seem to be "hot-headed" on this topic while non-users are rather cool about it. And isn't it a wonder that a simple tally request can cause some people to even adapt a stance of "looking for a fight", when they're not even forced to join in? :)) Cool it, fellow-posters, it's just a voluntary tally. MainStreet

Another interesting piece: artfizz just challenged me to a chess game. So, naturally, I have to ask him - "As a User, may I know what outside help you'll be using in this game, Sir? Btw, I'll be using no outside help, being a Non-user." And may the luckier player win. :)

Yes, that is exactly what was going on.  This is actually the 3rd thread I've seen this bug manifest itself in.  Thanks to Baseballfan for acting as the exterminator.
