Best place online to play slow games

Hi everyone, hope someone will be able to help me in this, I find it really hard to find a good website where people play slow (60 minutes or more) games. Everyone knows how is it here on chess.com so I tried freechess.org and there's some people there do but not many and they're mostly lower rated then me :/ Chesscube.com is a bit different, more players playing long games with higer ranking, but sometimes you have to wait ages for someone like that to come online. I won't even mention loads of smaller sites I visited, but it's the same story everywhere, all playing blitz and bullet. Anyone has any ideas? Oh and I'd rather avoid such websites as playchess.com or ICC serwer, because I don't really want to pay, unless there's no other alternative.

i cant think there is too many people out there who which to play G/60 or longer out there online. I prefer shorter blitz (G/5or10) games. But then again i havent searched for any G/60 games. Best of luck

a chessclub might be a good bet:)

I think you need to schedule sow games. There are a few forum/ladders for slow games. I will see if I can find the URLs

ok, so I see there's no way really to play slow games over the free servers, how does the situation look like with paid ones? Like the ICC or playchess.com? Anyone has any idea?

well i can usually get slower games on playchess...but very often my opps still want to blitz their moves for some reason so the quality of the game is quite bad. I cant get slow games at a chess club either, everyone just wants to play blitz. The only good slower games I ever get is in a coffeehouse with friends and no clock :P Anyway if you want to paly slower time control im always happy to

yup, that's right I get that on FICS a lot, people joining my 60 mins games and then playing bullet :/ I'm considering making website and forum of my own to bring slow players together as I can't find such place existing (and working) anywhere in the internet.

The FICS Team League seems to play at 45'+45".

I don't quite understand why blitz is so popular everywhere. Is it that the players want to demonstrate that they  can think faster than their opponent, or is it that they just don't want to spend alot of time playing a chess game, so the game can't last more than a few minutes or they will lose interest in it......Undecided

Some people play blitz just for fun, or to try out risky openings that they wouldn't normally play at slower time controls.

Alright that's the group that will bring together everyone that want's to play some slow games here or anywhere else on the internet, feel free to join and arrange a game with other members.

I've never had good luck finding a longish game like that on the internet. Your best bet is real life OTB. You don't necessarily have to join a club though. If you know where club members hang out or any chess hot spots you can just show up. People are always willing to play a friendly game.

you could just find people who are willing to be online for the chess.com turn based games.  Thats how my brother and I play occasionaly, no time controls but a nice liesurely pace.

Max and FiveofSwords:  Many of us have trouble finding good, slow but thoughtful chess.  I am happy to play slowly whenever I am on, although you might find that my rating is a trifle low for your taste.  On a normal basis I post an open invitation with 90 minutes for each member.  A number of people attempt to hurry me, but I ignore all such hurry-up prompts.  I seem to get more teenagers for opponents than adults.

Man, but 90 minutes per side is an enourmous time. For one I will never play such a time control on the internet because it's very likely that my connection will drop and I will lose the game by disconnection. The alternative is turn-based chess.

I would agree with you algernonn

Well I never experienced disconnections on FICS or chesscube.com and played good few games on those servers. Can't say anything about chess.com yet, because I didn't play enough games here to make any judgements. We will see though, newly made group for 'slow' players is growing unexpectedly fast :)

For this topic, please add me as a friend to play longer games on live chess, just specify it on the friend request and give me your handle's on other live chess sites. I mostly play on sundays and saturdays and would like to play at time controls from 15min to 2h per game, in this period 45 minutes specifically becouse I have a tournament coming at that time.

Why is blitz popular?

It's fun, an adrenalin rush.

Not so great for experimenting with new ideas in the openings because remember your opponent doesn't have much time to refute your brilliant idea (you know, the move that will spawn an opening variation named after you). But it's still fun.

Alright it might be fun, but it lacks the essence of the real slow chess. Anyway this topic is not to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the individual game types, I'm sure there was a lot of discussions about that before. Let's stick to the subject.

As mentioned the Leagues running on ICC and FICS have regular slow games, minimal disconnection and generally ( but not always ) are not blitzed.

Also see http://sites.google.com/site/chessmatcheshq/ which allows contacts for slow games.

I play slow chess on ICC in both the league and the standard organised tournaments which vary from 17 5 to 60 0, and again generally not blitzed.
