Chess "GOAT" discussion

Hi!

Do you know Michael Jordan? I think almost everyone knows him. He's a basketball legend. There were many taller ones, stronger ones, better shooters, better dribblers, better dunkers than him but it is HIM who is being named GOAT by basketball fans in the world.

What is GOAT? The GREATEST OF ALL TIME! He was the best because, apart from excellent abilities, he desired the victory as nobody in the world. He was ready to sacrifice everything to achieve his goals.

Ok, now I am going to ask you all who and why can be named the Chess GOAT?

Which of World Champions? Or maybe someone different?

MikeCrockett

I interpret the term GOAT to refer to something you should keep hidden as otherwise your opponent might get it. ;-)

This forum should be titled "The Men who stare a GOATS!"

I vote Tal. He was a visionary. He knew how to really play chess. He inspired us all.

so funny; in english the word Goat; when applied to people doesn't make one think "AWESOME"...  so cute acronym- but I call it a fail.

in regards to whos best- Fischer.  Of course!?

clearly he is GOAT.  next runner up.  Capablanca. IMHO.

Usually the term "goat" applied to a competitor means chump, loser, scrub and such.

AlCzervik

I'll give OP a slight pass since he's young, and not from the U.S.

Bill Russell was the best. Yeah, I don't really like the "goat" term, either. There's a reason it never caught on.

Al, I agree, Russell was great, but I always looked at Wilt the Stilt as the best I ever saw.

So how about BOAT then--best of all time?

My vote for BOAT--Stockfish.

It is very hard to compare players who were playing in different times. I have played chess for 20 years but b-ball is the second passion of my life. That's why I asked my question that way.

There were many great players who can be considered as the GOAT (Wilt, Bill Russell, Moses Malone, Magic, Bird, Olajuwon, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron) but that's MJ23 is the guy who leads in most surveys and fans' opinions.

We can see the same situation in chess. Who's better: "psychologist" Lasker or Rubinstein who used to play against pieces not an opponent, master of Strategy Botvinnik or master of an attack Tal, brilliant Fischer or "the CPU" Carlsen?

That is very interesting.

Me? No.

@ bb_gum234

As I wrote I have played chess for 20 yrs. I am 2207 rated. You don't need to tell me who was a good player. I am sure I know that right. "CPU Carlsen" does not mean he uses an engine too much. It means he makes mistakes really rarely.

My intention was to cause the discussion, not to find out. And I am successful.

It is hard to say. Every chess champion gave us something special. My favourite style was Kasparov's, I really respect and admire Capa's strategical feeling and when I feel sad I see young Tal's games. On the other hand Fischer took the World Championship from USSR on his own and was a genius at all.

To sum up, really hard to say but in my opinion Kasparov is GOAT.

Kevinum

I think Fischer is the GOAT in this case.

By the way, do you know that there are 2 World Champions who never lost the title? What is obviously obvious, the present one, Carlsen and Fischer himself. He should have played against Karpov i 1975 but refused to play.

Alekhine took the title to his grave but he had lost and taken back the Championship previously.

That's the point for Bobby!

Mateusz_Dubinski

Interesting point of view

Well, that was available to every champion.

Mateusz_Dubinski

Really? Every champion, apart from Fischer and Carlsen lost his title in match.

I mean, all of them could have refused to bring it into play and therefore never lose it.
