Greeter games are hit or miss :) You might have 1 or 2 out of 10 continue. It's weird, but most of them don't understand turn-based chess :) But for those 1 or 2 who continue it is really helpful!

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to include a message like this somewhere:

"Please note that the average turn-based game takes about X days.  If you're in the mood to play a quicker game please check out the Live Chess Beta."

I don't have a clue what X would be...

I've been a greeter for a short period of time and plan to do it again, sort of a community service since I don't have the money to pay at the moment.

I can tell you that the guy who greeted me was stellar.  We've played several times since and message each other fairly often.  I count my greeter as an on-line friend.  So if a bunch of cancellations are worth the one guy you get that you end up playing over and over, I'd say the payoff is well worth it.

Heh, I remember I missed out after a few moves myself. It was because, as erik said, I didn't understand what turn-based chess is! ;)

When I entered the site for the first time I myself made one move on my game and then allowed the time to run out because I forgot the game and I did't pay atention to the warnings

Fast foward two months, and now I am a greeter myself

It seems to have helped is to send a warm, welcoming message. I have had a litte more success.

If there is any positive side to having people drop out on your game because they don't unnderstand turn-based chess, at least your ranking goes up a little! Tongue out

Play you again sometime, Brian. I am practicing...

These games are unrated so your rating does not increases.

i am a greeter and I have to say that out of the about 20 games I played, only 4 or 5 ended by mate or resignation and not by my opponnent losing on time.

I see it like an exercise. I use openings that i rarely play and I'm more brave about making sacrifices. It's fun but usually it doesn't works out.

As a greeter, you have one or two moves in which to:

  • promote yourself
  • promote chess.com and the facilities of the site
  • discover which interests you have in common (if any!)
  • find out the new joiner's local time (Mr. Wolf!).

I sometimes use 'greeter games'  as an alternative to looking for Open Seeks.

I did a few Greeter games, but then one of the players asked me for a draw when it was a clearly won position for me, and I didn't want to discourage him from the site, so I agreed.  Then I noticed it goes into my record, so I decided to stop doing greeting games altogehter.
