Length of game and ratings

Can any one tell me how many moves have to be made before the ratings get taken into account if the opposition gets timed out?

Yes but i won a game earlier as the player got timed out after making 3 or 4 moves but screen stated game not long enough to effect the ratings.???

Well, if you made 3 or 4 moves, the least it could be is only 4. It could also be 5, 6, or 7. Does anyone know for sure?

(That's assuming 3 moves were actually made, i.e. that we're being given correct data...)

I know from my own experience that you can make 2 moves and then resign without effecting rating. I'm not sure about 3 or 4 (despite the statement of geoissa which suggests at least 3).

Again, does anyone know?

I looked in the help section. The answer is:

You can make 3 moves, resign, and the game will not count to rating.

If you or your opponent make 4 moves, and you thereafter resign, it counts.

The "too short to be meaningful" clause is somewhat questionable. You could screen some opponents within 3 moves, especially if you have a very early trap where incorrect play is indesirable. (e.g., 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 ... a mistake in move two for black spells his doom, but after move three he's nearing equality)

The game ended and my rating didn’t change at all. Why?

Solution There could be two explanations: 1. The game was not rated (check the DETAILS tab to see if it was a rated or unrated game). 2. There were fewer than 4 moves made. Games under 4 moves do not count toward ratings as they are too short to be meaningful.

My mistake, the game i had in mind was only 2 moves which didnt effect the rating but another game with 4 moves has just ended where the opposition was timed out and it did change my rating.  Thank you for clearing that issue anyway!

4 moves min then u get the rating points effected. Anything less and u dont effect rating points due to not enough moves made to determine any positional advantages or material advantages. The exeption would be 2 and 3 move mates (which are very rare) of course since it ends in mate and not resigning or timeouts....Cool

There's a way of testing that. But fast mates can leave ratings unaffected. Happened to me when I got Fools Mate in my first game in Facebook. At first, my rating increased but when they updated the application there was a note in the game saying it was too short to affect rating.

The fact that it was my opponents first game too might have changed things, but I really think they're right not to count it anyway. All it proves is that I know Fool's Mate.
