Maybe his opponent didn't know about en-passant!
Man killed over Chess game

I too suspect it was en passant. Strangely enough, there are still many people who don't know about en passant.

You can tell the difference easily. Is it a clubplayer? He/she knows. Did he learn chess at home from uncle Ben? He/she doesn't. Most really casual players I know, the ones that know the rules but nothing more, didn't know en passant. So just to make sure when playing someone new to me, I always ask :) Don't want to end up dead lol.

It could have been a parabolic movement of the queen. I have seen a player rated 2000 make a move like that with his opponent not even noticing!

They have the internet in Dublin, you know? I would say that this rules out en passant. I would think that chess_gg has the right answer.

Man killed over a chess game? Reminds me of my time in San Quentin Prison.

In which case you tell them about the rule, but put the pieces back and make another move and let them research it later.
There have been many times that I made a legal castle move and my partner objected. If they refused to take my word, I just play another move and later bring back proof I was right! :)
No reason to get bent out of shape over ignorance of the rules. It's a game, it's meant to be enjoyable. Life is too damned short to sweat the small stuff.

when they were playing, he got his opponent to look the other way and slipped another queen on the board.

This is Ireland's first cannibal murder and has rattled us all. Latest news is that the move was to do with a king! The murderer it is believed, ate his victims heart! Of course the media will make a big thing out of the chess angle, but it's a horrible gruesome event and my sympathies to his family and friends.

Chess is an intense and at times infuriating game but my condolences to the victim and his family -- it should never have gone this far!
What do you think the disputed move was? What is the worst argument you've ever had over a game of chess?
