Title values used to calculate points : GM - 100 pts , IM - 10 pts , WGM - 6 pts , FM - 5 pts , WIM - 4 pts , CM - 3 pts , WFM - 2 pts , WCM - 1 pt..

( WCMs are counted and are part of the table, but they did not fit in the view )

The ordering of titles reflects the average rating of players holding those titles.

GMs were given disproportionally high score, so that the table is in most part ordered by the number of GMs.

PHI means Philippines?

watcha

Fide country codes are cryptic, so I make no judgement on what they mean, but I can give you the top players under country code 'PHI' in the Fide players list:

rank active rank name title women title rating country sex age
1 1 Barbosa, Oliver GM   2521 PHI M 29
2 2 Gomez, John Paul GM   2512 PHI M 29
3 3 Paragua, Mark GM   2510 PHI M 31
4 4 Sanchez, Joseph GM   2504 PHI M 45
5 5 Sadorra, Julio Catalino GM   2501 PHI M 29
6 6 Antonio, Rogelio Jr GM   2478 PHI M 53
7 7 Laylo, Darwin GM   2471 PHI M 35
8 8 Torre, Eugenio GM   2468 PHI M 64
9 9 Pascua, Haridas IM   2462 PHI M 22
10   Datu, Idelfonso IM   2457 PHI M 43

Interesting. What about per population?

Sai

@watcha

Yes they are the Philippine masters. I will have my name in that list someday.

I had this stats two years ago as GMs per capita.

It turned out that Iceland has the most GMs per capita and I was advised to get a warm cap and move to Iceland. So no more per capita figures from me.

By the way Slovenia was 8th on that list.

What surprises me most in this list is that despite Germany has a very heavy presence in titled players and GMs in particular, the same is not felt when you look at 2700chess.com's super GM list. Germany is not a chess super power, unlike Russia, USA and Ukraine which are top ranked on this list.

Some follow up stats.

I was wondering if there is a connection between the points countries got for their titled players and the average rating in the respective countries.

There is some, but not much:

If you do the same thing for GMs, then surprisingly, the correlation is even slightly negative, the more GMs you have, the less the average rating in your country:

The only very strong positive correlation is between the number of GMs and titled players, the more titled players you have, the more GMs you produce:

Its good that I posted these images, because it did let me discover a bug. I used maps to store (x,y) value pairs for drawing the charts, as I handled them as proper functions, but with GMs for a given x ( number of GMs ) there can be several different y-s ( average ratings ), so it is not a proper function any more.

If I correct this, then the average rating is positively correlated with the number of GMs, as expected:

It's funny that for example Azerbaijan is behind Sweden but still have Mamedyarov, Radjabov, recently Gashimov, now Naiditsch and also some guys like Mamedov and Safarli that are quite strong. Sweden doesn't have at all the same top in spite of being ranked ahead here.

A similar relation a bit higher up in the table is Serbia vs France. Serbia is placed very high in spite of not having any player even close to the level of Vachier-Lagrave, Bacrot, Fressinet etc for many years.

This is what I get if I only allow >2650 rated GMs, and sort countries according to their number ( I think this list is more in line with what you would normally think of the chess strength of countries ). Countries are judged by the tip of the iceberg. The OP shows the under water part of the iceberg.

Can we update this list for 2020?
