That explains a lot about the quality of the fora around.

Why do you keep saying "fora" where  you really mean 'forum' ?

ClavierCavalier

Apparently, fora is a plural form of forum.

kco

also the plural for forum, as we know, is forums.

(It's so cool of you to ask about words and language in a public forum. Better than attacking bad spelling )

I don't mean forum, when writing fora. In Latin "fora" is the plural of "forum". (You may look at Pain in the English for more specific information).

I guess you find the same pattern in medium (plural: media).

The best part of that article are the comments saying its pretentious and condescending.  Learning the correct way is always good, though.

"Correct way" is a bit overrated. I used to be an orthograph-nazi too, but language evolves, and it's hard to say that sticking to the past is good per se.

For instance, the French for media is medias (even if it is already a plural), but none complains. ("medium" is only used in the meaning of "psychic", the -rarely used- singular being media)

ChessSlimShady

From your posts on Chess I've read, my perception is that you may not be a native english speaker either.

I'm Norwegian and I know it shines through all my writings. By your grammar, I've wondered if you are from the "so called" Eastern Europe.

Where are you from?

You're being rude just like your pal Schachkaempfer  forget it.

They are earned by every post in a thread, posting a blog, etc. and they are useless, except as a marker of how trollish you are. A good indication of the trollishness of a user is his ratio forum points / number of games played. When this ration reaches infinity, the correct name for such a user is "sockpuppet".

A very long time ago, chess.com used to offer T-shirts to those who reached 1000 points (or something like that). After the for(ums/a) were trolled to death when some people started abusing the system (posting long analysis lines earns one point, as well as posting "lol", but one of them takes more brain time), they stopped doing it.

What's worse is people using forums when they mean threads.

Scottrf

Everywhere else on the internet, a forum is a collection of topics, and the threads are the individual topics.

Scottrf

Yeah.

Or more like Normal = Forum>Sub Forum>Thread>Post

Chess.com Forum>Forum>Forum>Forum post.

I've noticed many differences in spellings of the same language but in different parts of the world.  In the US we spell liters, when most other places spell litres, as one instance.
