Don't push your luck little man and did he ask for bread again had me rollin. Now I've got tears in my eyes from laughing so fuggin hard!

" hate to break it to you, but chess is a competitive game."

For sure it is! I did not mean to say that it isn't. Competitvenss is not bad at all. But we can still make an effort to be nice to each other. That was the heart of my post.

MSteen

Well, I've only been on here a little over a month, but I have had precious few chats with anyone, and no one has congratulated me on a win. By nature I'm pretty sociable and thought that online chess would be a good place to have some conversations as we play, but after an initial greeting it's been near total silence.

However, I'm here to play chess, not to get my ego stroked (or to stroke anyone else's). If I win, I'll assume it was a gg. If I lose, I'll still be a sport and congratulate the winner. In fact, I usually (if I have time) make some humorously self-deprecating comment just before the axe falls.

It would be nice to relax and have some fun while playing (after all, the word is "playing," not "slaying"), but we can't all get what we want. If we did, I'd have gotten Miss October for Christmas yesterday.

So relax, play your game, strive to improve, be friendly on your end, and don't worry about the opponent's behavior; you're not going to change it.

MrDamonSmith

Congratulations on a nice win msteen and djones i hope some vbroader light has been shed on the nature of different personalities in general. You can still enjoy doing whatever you want without letting rude Fuggers (and even that is a matter of opinion) ruin it for you.

Good luck.

Cultivate a playing circle of friends, with whom you chat. Acquisition of said friends will take time, so relax in the meantime.

Let's all just get along guys... I mean... come on.

Chess tends to bring out the worst in people, at least in some of them - it's a competitive game and it's a "win-lose" type of game: If someone wins, someone else loses and few losers are as magnanimous as Wm Napier, who wrote that the best game he ever played was a loss (to Dr Lasker). It's also an ego thing to some players - if they win they're smarter than the loser and if they lose, uh-oh...

Chess.com has +6,000,000 members, so don't expect everyone to feel the same way about chess (or anything else) as you do.

Jen2001

Darn it ! Why cant we all just get along
That reminds me of a cute Pop song
We can Play Chess  with beauty & grace
If only you promise to  hide your face

Some are Kind, intelligent, loving & hot
So I just described what many are not !
I want to feel victories sweet embrace
The tortoise could win the checkmate race

Then there are those rated so very high
serious players with blood in their eyes
There is no way to  be quiet and just  get along
When Chess Cheaters are so mean & strong

Some love to chat, to learn, to play on-line
To make new friends when there is time
I sometimes picture faces when im dreaming
Thats why i always wake up screaming !

Most Chess Players here, are full of cheer
They ‘re here to play there’s no need to fear
For The rest of you, There’s no words to tell
Except for maybe ''GO TO HELL!!!''

See I can compromise and get along …LOL !!!!

Chess isn't all fun and games. Chess isn't Checkers. There is no 'en passant' or 'castling' in Checkers. Chess is serious business, okay? And this isn't stuff I just wrote down because I thought it was important. Seriously. i'm super cereal.

MrDamonSmith

Super cereal sounds like a great name for a new breakfast cereal ad campaign. Wait, hold on a minute, let me find a pen and write that one down...........

TheGreatOogieBoogie

You should see kombatants ("misspelling" intentional) either trying to take over Earthrealm and those trying to defend it.  We can never seem to take it, makes me sad =(  Also, that is far more serious business than Chess.  Hey, did I tell anyone about the time I beat up Superman?  I know I'm magic so it was kind of cheap but still, my greatest accomplishment ever! :D

MrDamonSmith

I would guess there are hard core overly competetive types in everything. Monopoly, badminton, go fish, old maid, etc. Those fuggin bingo players tho..., man, I think they're the worst by far. Scoundrels....

stephen_33

djones559, I agree with you completely.  I'm as competitive as the next player & I'll fight my corner to the bitter end but when I suffer a loss I bite my tongue & type 'well done' in the chat & it hasn't killed me yet!

People aren't unsporting & churlish because they're too competitive, it's because they lack character - we need a lot more like djones on this site.

varelse1

Well, of course we take our chess seriously!!

Do you know who doesn't take chess seriously? LOSERS!

thestoneroses

Scorpion is a weakling. No seriously. Scorpion gets PWND by Sub-Zero all the time. Everyone knows Lord Raiden rules Earthrealm. Scorpion's moves are the worst. His ''Get Over Here'' gimmick got old eleventy years ago. He's a washed out 'karacter'. God, I hate Scorpion. I would destroy Scorpion in Chess then point and laugh at his ugly Yellowish/stool-colored costume. I am so serious right now.

zborg

A war game where you fight to death, expending your pieces and pawns.

Sure, it can be fun, if you're willing to crack jokes and trash talk along the way.

Whether that satisfies the OP's desire for good clean fun remains an open question.

Hey, NO bed wetting allowed!  This a game for Kings, and Royalty.

It attracts only the best people, just like the Braveheart movie.  Smile

djones559

Stephen_33, thank you! I think you really understood my heart behind the post.
