How to beat an IM

Sort:
Jenium

This is the critical position in a game I played against a Mongolian IM. There are probably more than one way to get an advantage, so it is not a puzzle in the strict sense, but the continuation played in the game is the strongest...

Where did you play this game?

Jenium

On another server. Why?

I was wondering where you meet Mongolian IMs!

Jenium

There are plenty of Mongolian IMs on ICC. ;)

Haha I got every move without even thinking. Either:

1: The IM was not on his game and did not see an obvious attack

or

2: Watching all of the Tal videos and studying Tal games has made me play chess like a 1200 player but attack like a 2000 player.

Tal forever!

Jenium

Probably option #2. ;)

Jenium - it's a beautiful combo. It took me some fifteen seconds to find it (move by move - but the idea was immediately clear).

Incidentally, I beat here on chess.com a guy rated 2150 blitz, in sixteen move while I played black - using exactly that same idea. This is why it was so easy for me to find.

Maybe I'll post that gem here later - if I find it, and if I find the time to look for it...

This must be our lucky day - here's the game

Three minute blitz... amazing how much you can sometimes see and understand even in this brief time control:

@solskytz: Thanks for posting. Impressive game. I like how all the black pieces play together...

solskytz

I agree - sometimes everything just falls right into place!

Hadn't I played that specific one and someone cane and showed it, I could easily be fooled into believing that it was some kind of a gem by Morphy...

Really, really amazing game.

Jenium

Don't be too harsh. He is almost 80 and played against players like Bobby Fischer or Mikhail Tal. His game against Tal is even mentioned in "Life and Games of Mikhail Tal"...

solskytz

He did find a nice way to put you down though. I love such people as act like wet blankets for others. They must be the life of the party!

Squishey

Yea, at 80 years old you tend to be abit off your knockers and probably below peak strength. I think he missed Qg5 completely, just thinking after Bxg4-h5, that he's solidified his king and its all good.

solskytz

No need to downplay it. You beat an IM, which is a commendable feat at any age. Not too many people can boast having done that.

Some people boast having an IM for coach. So beating one must rank higher.

Beating someone with the title IM is different from beating someone at IM strength. Andrew Buguiser was a strong GM at his prime but now 2000 strength, does that mean beating him is an achievement equivalent to beating a GM at GM strength.

Yes because in chess he still retains the GM title.

Clairvoya

Thats funny, in the eyes of strong players, it wouldn't be viewed as equivalent. Deep down they would know you only beat a retired player way past prime, how would you feel beating up Ali in his 80s when he's confined to a wheelchair. I guess most players just want the bragging rights to their buddies and tell everyone that beat a GM.
