Ability to Hyperlink to Individual Posts

Right now I can link to a page, but must reference a post number to direct people to a specific post.  It would be great if there was a way to link to individual posts so that the scroll bar automatically brought readers to the post in question.  These hyperlinks could then be used in conjunction with the quote function so that a link to the quoted post was always present within a quote in order to provide the ability to easily see the quoted post in its original context.

What a great idea!

  • When a newcomer asked a question, someone could post a link to the SPECIFIC post that answered their question.
  • (If these newcomer questions were tracked, they could form the basis for a orientation/welcome FAQ)
  • The site help could be supplemented by links to specific posts, suitably indexed.
  • Any posts used in that way could earn extra points, thus rewarding useful contributions, and encouraging participation. (Maybe acknowledge the author?)
  • Members could bookmark posts they found helpful, in the knowledge that their browser bookmark would take them directly to the key information.

Yes, individual post links would be great.  So many other forums have them, and you'd think with a fixed number of posts (20) per page it should be easy.  However, chess.com's policy of actually removing posts when an account is canceled or closed creates a problem, since they renumber all posts after that point and individual posts can end up thus moving to new pages.  Their unfortunate policy creates a dynamic post system.

That makes it more challenging.

Wouldn't it be possible using the unique post id as an anchor within the page and then generate a reference to it. This should work except where deletions cause a post to cross back into the previous page.

Isn't it possible to generate a unique code from the date and time of the post? This will never change, even if the page number does....

Every post already has a unique ID. You can see it when you hover over the QUOTE button.  The unique quote_id of this post is 4761329.

The QUOTE button refers to somthing like this ...

There would also need to be a LINK button containing something like this ...

now that they arnt deleting posts when an account is deleted, couldnt they do it?

The Site Map is a very long HTML page - and illustrates how effectively anchors can be used to display the page starting at different positions within it.

Since the forum pages are paginated dynamically, it will require some extra processing to generate the individual post anchors. Plus, extra effort to be able to display a page starting from other than the first post.

Staff can still delete invididual posts, such that they no longer get displayed. The surrounding posts then get repaginated.
