Forum Posting: Nice-to-have Features

Sort:

A recent thread highlighted several areas where forum posting functionality could be enhanced:

a) A facility to reference individual posts – not just a page of (20 or so) posts [see also this thread]

b) A survey tool.

c) An IGNORE filter.

d) Better support for quoting – especially for nested quoting and for quoting from more than one post.

e) If the OP closes his or her account, all of the subsequent discussion (in a thread started by that ex-member) should not be lost

f) URLs (i.e. links) tend to disappear during submission or re-editing [BUG].

g) Table creation, table update & table quoting is poorly supported. (These features of the WYSIWYG editor TinyMCE have been disabled.)

h) If you click back through a topic in the middle of creating a post, everything that you have written gets thrown away.

i) The option to correct or change titles of forum topics after submission.

j) Facility to restrict forum search to topic titles.

k) Tracking of posts by member: you can't find all of the individual posts made by a particular person (yourself or anyone else), nor do you get alerted when they post something (other than when they create a new topic).

Nice thread,  but I'm not sure I'd refer to March 18, 2009 as recent.

An even more recent thread cast more light on the deficiencies of quoting.

Hindsight alert:

It might have been better if I'd simply added this as a post within this topic:

Particularly if the facility referred to already existed - that would be a tangled loop.

Two related issues:

- whether there is mileage in the topic title containing an explicit THEME reference e.g. Live Chess, Time Controls

- whether the initial post of a thread - where it contains a summary - should be updatable by more than one person.

Why not have a option where you can get a list of all posts made by a specific forum member. Also these "thank you/agree/ disagree type responses for each post.

Indeed.

However, in the absence of that, you can fall back on a Google site-specific search ...

I've got a feature that I think would be nice to have. I know chess.com would never implement it. All mods stay under the cloak of ananymity, but sometimes you want to know who to thank. They should all be assigned an emoticom. Then after you read the're comment, you'd have to go to the chart and match up who is which emoticom. So if I missed any of you in the past, in the words of Assistant Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson;  THANK YOU!CoolSmileWinkUndecidedEmbarassedFrownSealedYellFoot in MouthCryInnocentKissTongue OutMoney MouthLaughingSurprised

At some point chess.com forum would have to be integrated with facebook, some kind of a two way integration, so topics you are posting in appear in your facebook feed and you can reply from your facebook account.
