Philidor's defense , part 1

Philidor's defense is a good but very difficult and unforgiving defense.

I decided to post some typical ideas of the opening.

First let's see what is the best way for white to develop. Of course there might not be an objectively best way , but there is one that creates the most tactical threats for Black.

c4 is the most natural square for the bishop and the one that creates the most early problems for Black. It has a minor drawback though. The bishop is exposed to attacks like b5 or d5 , both thematic moves for Black in Philidor. Let's first see why the bishop is so dangerous in c4.

If Black survives the first moves he will still have to be very patient and slowly prepare counterplay. White has many ways to play.
