Garry Kasparov
Garry Kasparov (born April 13, 1963) is a Russian chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion. Widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time, he dominated the sport for over two decades with ease.
Chess Career & Achievements:
World Champion: He became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985 at age 22 by defeating Anatoly Karpov. He held the title until 2000.
World No. 1 Ranking: Kasparov was ranked world number one for a record 255 months between 1984 and his retirement in 2005.
Peak Rating: He reached a peak FIDE rating of 2851 in 1999, a record that stood until 2013 when it was surpassed by Magnus Carlsen.
Deep Blue Matches: He famously played two matches against IBM's supercomputer, Deep Blue. He won the first in 1996 but lost the 1997 rematch, marking the first time a reigning world champion was defeated by a computer in a match.
Historical Splits: In 1993, he broke away from FIDE to form the Professional Chess Association (PCA), leading to a fractured world championship title for 13 years.
Retirement
Retirement: Kasparov retired from competitive chess on March 10, 2005.
