Enter round 4 of the USAT 2018. Our team, The French Fries, comprised of Nathan Chen (1939), myself (1951), NM Joseph Wan (2249), and NM James Neal (2279) went 3-0 the first day, showing no signs of trouble with easily sweeping two of our teams and winning 3-1 against another. But the real battle started the next day in round 4. After a few hours that saw Beta Infinity (2190) fall in a shocking upset to a team rated 1933, the tournament's top seed, Chess Castle of Minnesota, sporting GM elect Andrew Tang, carried the top seed with an average rating of 2199 fall in round 2 and finally, No Pawn Intended, featuring defending champions FM Sam Schmakel and NM Michael Auger, fall in round 2, the French Fries were in first place on tiebreaks with an average rating of only 2104. After a relaxing blitz event that evening, NM Joseph Wan and I went back to our room to prepare. We had learned that night that our opponents would be Wisconsin Chess Academy, a strong team that featured FM Erik Santarius (2415), FM Alex Betaneli (2295), USCF Expert Hersh Singh (2022), and Kevin Li (1996). During our preparation, Joseph told me that their knowledge of Open Sicilian theory was very strong, so I decided to play something different. Check out the game to find out what happened:
