How to play with the Carlsbad formation. Structure 4
Hello fellow chess player,
In todays lesson we are going to look at how to play with the Carlsbad formation in my fourth pawn structure in this course out of 16 structures. My last one was the Slav formation. My future one's will include King's Indian Defense, Najdorf, Dragon, French Defense and more. Some of these will have multiple parts like the Najdorf, KID, and French, so so stay tuned.
The Carlsbad formation comes out of d4 openings like the Nimzo-Indian and Caro-Kann. It is a common pawn structure. Below is a few thing you will need to know.
White's plans:
1.Go for the minority attack with b2-b4-b5 and the a-pawn
2.Push f2-f3 and e3-e4 to gain the center and more space. (when you have more space don't trade)
Black's plans:
1. Place knight on e4 to create a kingside attack but this is not always possible if f2-f3 has been played.
2.b7-b6 and c6-c5 to transpose to a hanging pawns or c6-c5 directly to transpose to a Isolani. links to those posts are here:

3.b7-b5 to create an outpost on c4 and a4 once b2-b4 has been played. But be careful your c6 pawn is now a backwards pawn. (a backwards is a pawn that can be defended on that move and is off it's starter square.)
My next structure in my course is the Najdorf which will have 2 parts. Before that I will give you 8 annotated games. 2 for each d4 structure non KID which are the Isolani, Hanging pawns, Slav formation, and Carlsbad formation.
Thankyou!
