Best Chess Games: Anand's Most Spectacular Move? - Anand vs. Lautier, 1997
Some games are meant to be pored over, deeply analyzed, and learned from. Some games are simply meant to be enjoyed, mouth agape, as we bask in the beauty of chess.
I would argue that Anand's 1997 miniature against Lautier is the latter. Like a Wes Anderson movie, a van Gogh painting, or Yosemite Valley, the moves 15.f3!!, 20.h6!!, and 21.Bg6!! are a striking visual treat. They defy analysis, but they are sure to strike a chord in the heart of any chess lover.
Is Anand's 21.Bg6!! the most beautiful and spectacular move of his chess career? In my opinion, yes! However, Anand has certainly played many other worthy candidates; post your favorites in the comments
I've annotated this game below in further depth below. There are plenty of pretty variations that didn't work that I was not able to cover.
