Chigorin's King Leads The Attack - Best of the 1900s - Chigorin vs. Mortimer, 1900
Mikhail Chigorin, the great Russian master, was a fine attacking player with a complex and unique style. For me, he recalls modern grandmasters like Morozevich, Rapport, and Dubov who always find creative and unique approaches to chess and chess openings in particular. Chigorin has many fine attacking games and combinations to his credit, but probably none are as spectacular as the following gem won against James Mortimer.
Chigorin offers the Vienna Gambit and plays the most enterprising line, allowing ...Qh4+ and ascending with his king into the center of the board. Mortimer initially responds well, with aggression, but the one seems on him to maintain the attack and compensation, and after a daring piece sacrifice from Black, Chigorin happily gives back some material - his queen - to simplify the position and absorb his opponent's flagging initiative. Chigorin's flurry of minor pieces soon overrun the black position, creating a fine finish.
