Playing in the 2024 Chess.com Daily Chess Championship

I know I'm a bit late, but sometimes you're better late than never. I have no idea what exactly this blog will be, but I guarantee it'll be chess related. There'll probably be little to no commentary (unlike in @SavageOppress's Round 1 blog) seeing as this tournament happened over a year ago and I don't remember what I was thinking during these games. I might watch the games and commentate a bit.

I joined the 2024 Chess.com Daily Chess Championship (CDCC for short). Yes. The 1 day no vacation tournament. And I didn't time out in all of my games.

I will be following the winners of each group all the way to the end of the tournament. For example, if Darla wins the group I'm in, I'll follow her Round 2 games. If Danny wins Darla's group, I'll follow his Round 3 games.

Round 1 - Group 1,634

Round 1 starts on January 1, 2024. There are 63,352 players competing, and I'm playing against only 11 of them. For anyone curious, my group is 1,634 of 5,277. Yes. There were 5,277 winners for Round 1. No, I will not be listing all of them.

When I saw Nd4, I was like "Oh yeah capture with one of the kni-" *Bxd4* "...Well then".

If I hadn't lost on time, I would've lost by checkmate. I think my mistake was Qd7 even though it protected my knight.

Why did I play Qf7...Why couldn't I have played Rxc8? I think that's the whole reason I played Rf8. Now he gets another rook.

I assume that, had I not lost on time, he would've played Rxg7.

    Post Tournament

    @patzers won with a record of 81 W / 3 L / 10 D and 339 points awarded.

    @Novik89 placed second with a record of 78 W / 2 L / 14 D and 169 points awarded.

    @Schadenfreude5 got third with a record of 83 W / 5 L / 6 D and 102 points awarded.

    The tournament ended on January 22, 2025, lasting for 388 days. 769,528 games were played, with 623,981 timeouts. The average rating was 846, and I kind of expected it to be higher.

    The biggest upset was when a 791 won by resignation against a 2047 (game link):

    Although Padu did withdraw from the tournament, so that's the likely cause of Gen's win.

    I hope you at least found this blog to be interesting. I have joined the 2026 CDCC and plan on blogging that as well (the rounds will be separate blogs), this time possibly with commentary, even though I have no idea what sort of commentary a U800 in all categories could give lol

    Also type "F" in the comments for Round 2 because while working on it I accidentally closed the tab and lost a fair amount of progress.
