The Good and Bad Grasshoppers
Introduction
In the middlegame, Grasshoppers can be very active, taking the opponents pieces in special ways, but in the endgame, are they pleasing or are they puzzling?
On the Pleasing side...
Grasshoppers can be a very easy piece to understand how to move. You just jump over another piece and land next to it. That’s pretty good, but...
On the Puzzling side...
In the endgame, there are less pieces for the Grasshopper to jump over, and fewer pieces means fewer chances for Grasshoppers to move. That means Grasshoppers might be immobile for part of the game. That also means that you have to coordinate your pieces to help the Grasshopper to move, which might ruin your plans. It may help to have a Grasshopper Train (we went over this in part 8) or a Grasshopper Wall with at least 4 Grasshoppers (we went over this in part 7).
