Hello everyone! Welcome to a new blog post. Today i am going to show you a little bit of Chess.com's history! So, Chess.com is an internet chess server and social networking website were you can play games with your friends and even people from another nation! You can also write to others, make clubs and much more.

The site has a freemium model in which some features are available for free, and others are available for accounts with subscriptions. They are called Gold, Platinum and Diamond. You can then do things that others with a basic account can't do. And you also get a ''flair''. There are 50-100 flairs!

Online chess on Chess.com (and other chess websites and apps) can be played against other users and accounts in daily, rapid, blitz or bullet time controls. This is how much time you can play with at each time control:

  • Bullet: 1 minute - 2I1 minutes                                                                                                           (2I1 means that you have 2 minutes and 1 second on the clock, but you get one extra second for each move)
  • Blitz: 3 minutes - 5 minutes
  • Rapid: 10 minutes - 30 minutes
  • Daily: 1 day - 14 days

You can also customize your time with a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 120 minutes (2 hours). But then you need to wait a long time until someone with the same level of rating as you puts on the same time control as you at the same time as you. So i reccomend you to not do it (unless you are going to play with a friend), but it is cool that Chess.com made it.

Chess Variants

Chess.com also have some cool chess variants available to play. And Chess.com even got some cool stuff like a chess engine, computer analysis, chess puzzles and more teaching resources that are offered (limited). But if you pay for a premium membership, (Gold, Platinum or Diamond) you will get more of these resources to learn chess more and better.

How large is really Chess.com?

As one of the largest chess platforms in the world, Chess.com achieved the milestone of 100 million users on December 16, 2022 and has about 11 million daily active users as of April 2023.

Chess.com has hosted online tournaments including Titled Tuesdays, the PRO Chess League, the Speed Chess Championships, PogChamps, Online Chess Olympiads and computer vs. computer events.

 The start of Chess.com

Chess.com was originally set up in 1995 by Aficionado, a company based in Berkeley, California. In 2005, Internet entrepreneur Erik Allebest and partner Jarom Severson, who met as undergraduate students at Brigham Young University, bought the domain name and assembled a team of software developers, redeveloping the site as a chess portal. The site was relaunched in 2007, having heavy campaigning and promotion on social media.

Response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine In response to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Chess.com published two articles that were critical of the invasion and replaced Russian and Belarusian flags with grey flags that linked to these articles. In retaliation, Chess.com was blocked in Russia.

Chess.com Global Championship 2022

Chess.com Global Championship In November 2022, The Chess.com Global Championship was inaugurated with a $1,000,000 prize pool. 8 players that advanced from the CGC Knockout competed for a $500,000 total prize fund and Global Champion title in the finals taking place in Toronto, Canada. GM Wesley So became the first Chess.com Global Champion, defeating GM Nihal Sarin in the finals (with a match score of 4.5–1.5).

Chess.com Today

Today Chess.com has over 170 million members, with over 85 000 people joining every 24 hours. They also have a new boss called IM Daniel Rensch (@DanielRensch).

They also got more websites like ChessKid.com, Chessable.com, Aimchess and more. They got a shine future. And i wish that they will earn much money by this massive website so that they can go on with this massive project.

That was everything for today. I hope that you liked this blog post. Follow for more posts like this, and tell me in the comments if i got some fact wrong. Bye!
