Recently it would have been the 80th birthday of Michael Apted, but sadly he died earlier this year. An acclaimed film director, for our purpose he directed the Bond film The World is Not Enough in 1999, using the renowned Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Bucks and many locations, all of which will have garnered tourist interest as a result, including:- in Wiltshire the Motorola Plant, Groundwell + Swindon; in Kent the Chatham Historic Dockyard, Chatham; in Surrey Hankley Common, Elstead; in Bedfordshire the Luton Hoo Estate, Luton. Born in Aylesbury, Bucks , he was educated at the City of London School & Downing College, Cambridge and started his career at Granada TV in Manchester as a researcher where he began the project which was to fill his life, filming a group of seven children, who were revisited with a camera and filmed every seven years up to 63 Up in 2019 – a project which would earn him two BAFTAs apart from his numerous credits as a director and producer (such as another BAFTA for a Play For Today 1970 Coal Miner’s Daughter 1980 Gorillas in the Mist 1988 Enigma 2001 Rome 2005 Amazing Grace 2006 Chronicles of Narnia – Voyage of the Dawn Treader 2010) see him honoured by the Queen with a CMG and he became President of the Directors Guild of America and on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He lived his last three decades in Los Angeles. We believe a match should be held in his honour and hope you will accept.
