Hi Astronomers! We received a challenge from a small but highly rated group for a team match. Currently they have 4 members, so it will probably be a small match of four players per side at most. But, their top three players are all rated 2000 - 2150. So, if we accept this challenge, we will need our higher rated players to go against them. So, are you guys interested? If so, I will accept the challenge. If not, I will decline it. Let me know as soon as possible. Thanks! :-) George
Thought it would be interesting to find pieces of music related to astronomy. First example: Handel's "Total Eclipse" from his oratorio "Samson". (Not entirely sure why the stars were dark to him, but it was perhaps a metaphorical total eclipse). Anyone like to post others? Total eclipse ! no sun, no moon; All dark amidst the blaze -of noon I ...glorious light ! no cheering ray To glad my eyes with welcome day ! ...Sun, moon, and stars are dark to me.

What do you think of the idea of black holes being made of some kind of extremely exotic solid substance that's almost exactly the same size as where the event horizon would be. So they would be called black stars instead of holes? They are unable to collapse all the way down to a singularity because of "vacuum polarization." The physics outside the hole would remain the same. There was an article about this in Scientifc American. I've just skimmed it, so far.

Is it as has been suggested - like slopping planes or - where sub atomic particals exchange "gravitons" or - something completely diffrent ?
Newton for your laws Einstein for relativity Galeleo for the telescope Kepler for your laws and all those other people that do the most difficult JOB of thinking.
Hello all, Just wanted to share a strange "meteor moment" I had Friday Morning. Back in the 70's I was watching the Perseid's and saw the brightest meteor of my life. About magnitude -2, leaving a persistent train (no sonic boom..:). It also must have had an angular shape, as it corkscrewed a little as it went across the sky. To make this even more amazing, it was not a Perseid's, as it was south and had a perpendicular path to the radiant in Perseus. For many years I have described this meteor to others, and called it the "best and brightest" I had ever seen. All the others that night were shower members. Yesterday (Friday), I went out just after 4 AM local to watch my favorite shower of the year. I had only been observing about 5 minutes when I again saw a -2 magnitude meteor (I am resisting using the term "fireball", but this one also would almost qualify). The thing I immediately realized was that it also followed the same path across the celestral sky as the one in the 70's, and also left a persistent train. No corkscrew path, but in all other regards, very similar. Again, I saw no more that were not from the Persid shower. All this is scientifically of no consequence, but it did give me a strange feeling that the heavens were communicating with me.....or maybe it was just a LSD flashback...lol. In other news.....I don't have very dark skies here....averaged 1 meteor every 5 minutes....one did brighten dramatically several times before burning out. Mark P.S. The "Meteorite Men" make it look so easy. Has anyone found any meteorites that are notable for size or composition?
so what are peoples opinens on the tenth planet named alledgedly nibru or something? i think its pretty cool. its a messed up star i think. but not totally sure

I was recently combing through the forum topics and noticed no one has posted anything on this. They all make plausible statements and are/were highly accredited individuals. What do you guys think? The Disclosure Project is a nonprofit research project working to fully disclose the facts about UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence, and classified advanced energy and propulsion systems. We have over 400 government, military, and intelligence community witnesses testifying to their direct, personal, first hand experience with UFOs, ETs, ET technology, and the cover-up that keeps this information secret. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vyVe-6YdUk www.disclosureproject.com

The Large Hadron collider is being switched back on this week after someone dropped a piece of a baguette into a cooler"that must have been the most expensive baguette ever made,I bet it wasn't a subway".Anyway what answers do you think it will reveal, will the Higgs Boson particle be revealed ,will it create micro Black holes and what implications will they have.

If these researcher are correct the chain of assumptions based on the WMAP data on CMB go out the window. http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=9938&utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ASY_NEWS_SUB_100618_final&utm_content=

We need one more player rated 1300 - 1600 for the team match against the Borg group. Can anybody sign up so we can get this match started? Thanks! Here is a link to the match: http://www.chess.com/groups/team_match.html?id=27251 Take care, George

Recent computer simulations and research have shown that dim stars could likely form in a scenario where the weak nuclear force is entirely absent. Planets harboring life could exist in a closer orbit to these stars. So if the weak force is not required for life then why does our universe have it?
