CHECKMATE WITH A BISHOP AND KNIGHT This is the hardest mate to complete and it requires the stars to align in order for it to work. Using the knight, bishop and king, the white player will force the king toward a corner that matches the color of the bishop. Using the pieces and some clever maneuvering, white will gradually squeeze black's space until the king is stuck in the corner and the bishop delivers the mate.

CHECKMATE WITH THE TWO BISHOPS A king and one bishop cannot checkmate the opposing king. However, a king and the bishop pair can. The king and bishops will force the king to a corner. If the king is in a dark corner, the dark bishop will be the one to deliver checkmate. If the king is in a light corner, the light bishop will be the one to deliver checkmate. Check out this example.

CHECKMATE WITH THE ROOK The white player in this example will use the rook to defend a specific rank on the board and won't use the rook to check the black king until the white king is directly across from the black king with one square between them. This way the black king is forced to move toward an edge of the board.

CHECKMATE WITH THE QUEEN To checkmate with a queen on an open board, the queen should be placed a "knight's move" away from the king. The queen copies the king's moves until it is forced to the edge of the board. After that the king marches in to assist with the checkmating move. Check it out here on this board.
