I was thinking about the possibility of the return of the K.O. Cup. This would run alongside the main league from the second season onwards (of the current format). The divisions as they are today actually make this task a lot easier, and we can almost follow an F.A. Cup system when seeding teams.
One of the problems with how the first cup started was that some very small teams got paired with very large teams. This could now be combatted using the following method.
Round 1:
The four bottom C-teams (from the previous league season) are randomly paired and play.
Round 2:
The two winners advance. They are joined by the two top C-teams and the eight bottom B-teams. Now these twelve teams are randomly paired and play.
Rounds 3-6:
The six winners advance. They are joined by the two top B-teams and the eight A-teams. Now these sixteen teams are randomly paired and play, the winners advancing to the next round, until we have the single winner.
As you can see, there is now no chance of a small, weaker team being paired with a large team early on. (Of course, if a small team is strong there is still a possibility of fighting a large team later.) As I previously said, the cup would run alongside the league starting from season 2 (using the results from season 1) and should not add many extra games to anyone's load. (Shouldn't ever exceed two concurrent games, and that's for particularly slow players.)
What are your thoughts on this?
