The duck of Duck Chess has the major problem that apart from it being an unrestricted veto over the opponent‘s next move from that position, nobody likes having extraordinary illegal moves. Since both players just playing this piece where the opponent can’t move anyway defeats the point of its existence, I suggest a variant where it works in reverse, not blocking the square where it stands and permitting for the opponent‘s next move, moves which the pieces cannot normally make according to the file where it stands:
a and h files:
Pawn -> WfcF
Knight -> NW
Bishop -> Dragon Horse
Rook -> RD
Queen -> QD
King -> R2F, royal
b and g files:
Pawn -> NmfWcfF
Knight -> Wildebeest
Bishop -> Archbishop
Rook -> Chancellor
Queen -> Amazon
King -> Royal General
c and f files:
Pawn -> FmfW
Knight -> NF
Bishop -> BA
Rook -> Dragon King
Queen -> QA
King -> B2W, royal
d file:
Pawn -> Commoner
Knight -> General
Bishop -> BAW
Rook -> RDF
Queen -> QAD
King -> Q2, royal
e file same as d file but anything is royal
Is this a good variant? What changes should I make? Is it balanced? I don't really have much more to say, I'm just throwing this idea out into the void.
