Part One: how many - how often? Our KIA inc Club Vote Chess games are intended to be instructional games for the benefit of all of our members; advanced and beginning players and everyone in-between. The ideal is to provide a steady flow of tutorial activity without overwhelming those who participate. The formula I have found which works best is actually quite simple - start one new game each month. After a month at three days per move we will have made five moves. This is usually enough that the game will have assumed a distinct variation, although still in the opening phase. It is then time to start another game. In another month and another five moves, the first game will most likely be entering the tactical phase. Then on to the middle game, the late middle game, the end game, etc. The average vote chess game lasts between six months (30 moves) and eight months (40 moves). Many games are shorter due to time-outs and aborted games. In practice this usually results in an aggregate of about six games running consecutively, all of them in different phases. This keeps it interesting. The Vote Chess participant will constantly be seeing how the KIA works at different phases of the game. Part Two: what day to start a game? If we are not careful in scheduling, the situation could easily arise when it could become our turn, in all of our games, all on the same day, or on nearly the same day, resulting in a frenzy of activity followed by doldrums days wherein nothing happens. To avoid that kind of logjam, I have been starting new games according to a schedule using a calendar software based on the six day turn around of 3 days per move. When it became that time each month, to start a new game, I could simply check the calendar for an open slot (day) and then submit an open seek on the morning of that day, and usually have a game underway vs a good opponent by that afternoon. With a new game starting each month and a new position to analyze each day, like a daily puzzle, we have instructive games in all phases and spread out over time making our Vote Chess program more interesting and instructive for all who follow and participate. I have done it this way successfully for several years. But times have changed. Today Open Seeks are overrun by absurd challenges and low rated, one-person teams taking open seeks. If we are going to have meaningful instructional games then we need to find good opponents. And finding them is the easy part. Once you have found a suitable opponent, do you just send a challenge? And what if they don't accept? How long do you wait for a response? I think the best way is to contact the club in advance and ask if they are willing to play and that we will be the one to send the challenge on a day of our choosing. It might mean days of back and forth discussion but since a VC game lasts six to eight months, I believe it is worthwhile to make this preparation. But right now I just don't have the time. I don't play the KIA anymore. I never did play it very much. For several years I have been maintaining this club simply because of the people who enjoy these games.
Welcome to KIA inc Thank you for your interest in the King's Indian Attack. The purpose of this group is to provide our members with the resources with which to develop a personal repertoire based on the KIA. <--- King's Indian Attack In the club forum click the topic "KIA References" for a list of books about the KIA. Click a book cover to open a public book study club for that book which contains links to a diagram or database version of the example games presented in each book. Even without the book, playing through these games will help you become familiar with the variations. Watch group notes for the "KIA Game of the Day" which will contain a link to a diagram or database version of an example variation from one of the books. We play Thematic Team Vote Chess for it's learning value in order to provide members with hands-on experience playing the KIA, sharing our knowledge and experience. New members are encouraged to join our group games. Feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. Prior to joining our vote chess games, new members should review our "Team Vote Chess Guidelines". Feel free to use the Club Forum to ask questions, submit topics and post your KIA games for review by club members. Enjoy the club.
KIA inc - Vote Chess most recently updated 2020/08/23 "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men." ---Douglas Bader "Every game is defined by it's rules. If there's no rules there's no game." --- wormrose <--- Typical KIA setup This club is dedicated to playing the King's Indian Attack (KIA). It is the only opening we play. It is the only reason this club exists. Therefor we only play 1.Nf3 in our Vote Chess games. If we play 1.e4 then Black can deny us a KIA, for example by playing 1...d5. If several members want to play a 1.e4 variation of the KIA then please contact me and let me know which variation you would like to play and I will create a VC game using a preset position. This is a team effort. Please do not treat our group games as your personal game. We have these guidelines because our members want them. Our games typically allow three days for us to make a move. One Rule Do not vote for a move unless it has been suggested in comments in the discussion forum and has not been refuted. If your move of choice has not been suggested then suggest it. There are NO exceptions to this rule. Offenders will receive one warning and if it re-occurs they will be removed from the game. One Suggestion It is recommended that members withhold their votes until the clock reads 24 Hours or less, so as to make the best use of our three day time control. There ARE exceptions to this rule. However, voting on the 1st day of our turn is only allowed in forced situations.Prior to 24 hours on the clock; please do not submit a comment that you have voted early or a comment which contains the current votes. I expect everyone to use good judgement. Votes are far more effective when we have discussed the pros and cons of our candidate moves. Please use standard algebraic chess notation so we can all understand each other! N= B= R= Q= K= Chess engines are NOT allowed in 0ur vote chess games. Archived computer games are also NOT allowed. Please avoid mentioning computer analysis in our vote game forums. Moves can be submitted from experience, books, articles, videos or from chess databases which can be found at various websites. If you see a foolish move or blunder being suggested by another team member please be courteous, respectful and constructive in your appraisal of the move. Let us judge the moves - not the people who suggest them.If you get mad and decide to leave the game or if you should accidentally click on [Leave Game] you will see a confirmation pop up which will give you a second chance to stay in the game (suggested). If you still chose to leave; that action is irreversible. Please show respect for your team mates and keep the language clean. Enjoy the games!
BOOKS The top three are recommended. Click on a book cover to open one of my public study group wherein can be found links to all the games referenced in that book. If you prefer 1.Nf3 KIA then I recommend Dunninghton. If you prefer 1.e4 KIA then Emms is recommended. McDonald's book goes deep into Black's queenside expansion. The older books contain more example games to analyze than McDonald's.. King's Indian Attack: Move by Move - McDonald - 2013 starting out: King's Indian Attack - Emms - 2005 The Ultimate King's Indian Attack - Dunnington - 1993 This is a revised edition of an earlier publication "How to play The King's Indian Attack" by Dunnington. There is significant enough improvement in this book over the earlier version that the earlier is not linked here. The King's Indian Attack - IGM Henley & Postal Master Hodges - 1993 A basic text covering all the 1.e4 and 1.Nf3 variations. Highly recommended for KIA beginners. Successful Vote Chess games require a great deal of discussion to be beneficial. But what can be included in these discussions? Almost anything you can think of! These are just a few examples: Copying/pasting database moves (chess.com's, private, another website, etc.) analysis (figuring out if we go here, then they go there...) questions ("Why do we have to play that now?") answers ("It helps control the d4-square.") games (personal, GM, etc.) moves ("I think we should consider ...Be6, ...Rd8, or ...0-0".) plans ("Once we trade down, our central pawns can be pushed.") strategy ("We have to avoid a bishops-of-opposite-colors ending to win.") tactics ("11...Bxf3! 12.Nxf3 and then 12...Nxd4 wins a pawn.") links ("The ["Learning An Opening"] blog was really helpful.") opinions ("I think we're losing...we should play for a draw.") diagram your own or someone else's analysis (Help topic: ["How do I use the Analysis Board & Editor?"]) commendation ("That's a great find!") constructive criticism ("I don't think that move works because that would lead to losing a pawn...") requests ("Can you show a line demonstrating that point?") background info ("They are a strong team, but they time out a lot.") humor (...okay, I can't actually think of a joke...) and much, much more! These are just a few ways to contribute and for everyone to benefit. Think of a Vote Chess game as a campfire. Someone can throw in a log or just toss in a twig, but as long as everyone chips in it will keep the fire going...or, in this case, keep the Team Vote Chess game going.

I loosely understand the purpose of the KIA's signature e5 pawn push is to dislodge the f6 knight. This serves to aid the h-pawn's thrust to h5, exchanging that h-pawn, and pressuring the weakened h7 square now down a natural defender. My question is how to interpret my position after Black pushes f6 often compelling the exchange, exf6, allowing the knight to return to f6. Below is an example. This early e5 push only served to open up the light-squared diagonal Black's King sits on. Questions: 1) Is white's e5 pawn push only worth it if it can be accompanied with enough pressure to delay black's knight from returning to f6 long enough to launch my pawn to h5? 2) Is the open diagonal to black's King generably reasonable compensation for trading off a central pawn and the 2 tempo spent doing so?
King's Indian Attack vs King's Indian Defense. 23 moves, and no captures before move 16. How do you like it? I love these closed games! Same game, just different look for those who prefer 3D pieces (like I do):

My attempt at the KIA versus the French Defense resulted in Black's pawns on e5 and d4 with White's on e4, d3, and c3. If the KIA prefers a closed and immobile center, what are the pros and cons of advancing to c4 to accomplish this? Here is the opening for context: In the real game I chose Nb3 harrassing Black's Bishop, not c4, to delay black pushing f5; however, I imagine other lines may lead to considering a c4 and e4 bind. If c4 is chosen, is it deviating from the KIA too much to apply it's principles? In other words, is structuring white's pawns on e4, d3, and c4 wandering into another opening?

If the members of this club want to play vote chess then please provide me with a team who will accept the following conditions: a) The opponent must have a minimum of 3 players on their team by the end of the first move or we will abort the game. We do not play vote chess against individuals unless they are titled or are rated higher than 2200. b) Time control = 3 days per move c) The opponent plays Black The game begins 1.Nf3. If enough people want to play a 1.e4 variation of the KIA we can accommodate with a preset position. d) Having agreed to these conditions, KIA inc will send the challenge at the time of our choosing. Please do not suggest teams to me that might be interested for me to contact. Please provide only a team that has already agreed to these conditions.

I am very proud of this game I just played. I played all book moves and it was as if I was playing it out of a book :

Disclaimer : This is not a KIA game. But I thought I would share it here to bring some flavour. I hope its ok once a while. I always wondered how many blunders can I manage to make in a row on a bad day - because normally when you blunder you often dont get a second chance to correct it or at best just one more chance. A game I just finished, I managed to make 4 blunders and finally getting defeated. Funny thing is that while I was making them, I wasnt realizing that those can be so bad moves ( if you want, you can just watch the last 7 moves of which last 4 are blunders and you would see that black was actually in a solid winning position ) :

I know I made a blunder in the end. Luckily my opponent didn't cache on it. But that was too late in the game. I would like your views on how was the "formation" of the attack ( as a KIA player ). I am specifically irritated when black is able to play delayed e5 . Everything goes for a toss. How to tackle it. In this game it happened, I tried to handle it. Is it the right way and approach. Btw, I missed a mating chance on move 14 ( its a mate in 6 ). thanks, Mayank

I am just starting to learn on KIA and gaining some of the ideas in KIA. I read in a book that certain openings just dont allow KIA because of the nature of themselves. Scandinavian being one of them. So I just came across an opponent and I thought lets try some ideas of KIA. Would be glad if some of the seasoned KIA players can have a look and comment on what they think of it. thanks, Mayank

Here is a free digital book from chessable.com that helps you to quickly learn the main ideas of the KIA using chessable's spaced repetition learning method. I recommend it even if you are already familiar with the KIA. The course includes a 2 hour video lesson from FM Kamil Plichta. Short & Sweet: The King's Indian Attack
Is there a big library of PGN that I can download for looking at on my phone? Wormrose I see you're making a lot of PGNs for the book study. Can you throw all those into one PGN file if you haven't already?
