Initially, the “Queen” could only move one square at time diagonally. The piece was originally called the “advisor” and was one of the weakest pieces on the board. It wasn’t until chess was brought to Europe and the rise of Queen Isabella during the 15th century that the “advisor” was replaced with the “queen” and became the most powerful piece on the board. The second book ever printed in the English language was a book about chess. The book, The Game and Playe of the Chesse by William Caxton, was printed in 1474. The first book, also printed by Claxton was The Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye. Mathematically, the number of possible unique games of chess is greater than the number of electrons in the observable universe. The number of electrons is estimated to be about 10^80 , while the number of unique chess games is 10^120 (that’s 1 followed by 120 zeros). There exists a hybrid sport of chess and boxing called chess boxing. Alternating between rounds of four minutes of speed chess and three minutes of boxing, the goal is to achieve a knockout or a checkmate. The origin of the game of pawn vs brawn can be traced back to a 1992 science fiction graphic novel by Yugoslavian-French cartoonist Enki Bilal. The longest chess game possible (in theory) is 5,949 moves. Based on the various movement combinations, the maximum number of moves that a game can continue without a player claiming a draw is just over 5,900 moves. In reality, the longest Official Chess game in recorded history lasted 269 moves. It ended in a draw. Hungarian psychologist László Polgár, raised three daughters who eventually all became world champion chess players. The “Polgár sisters”: Zsuzsa, Zsófia, and Judit were the product of an educational experiment by their father who believed “geniuses are not born, they are made”. He home-schooled his daughters in the late 1960s and trained them in chess daily. Judit Polgár became a Grandmaster at age fifteen and eventually became the only female chess player to reach the top 50. Chess is a mandatory subject in Armenian schools for every child over the age of six. Since 2011, all children in the former Soviet nation from six to eight years old have had compulsory chess lessons. It’s the first country in the world to include it as part of the primary school curriculum along with such standards as mathmatics and history. In Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, Alice’s movements through the book are designed to be a playable game of chess. The sequel to Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland, has Alice encountering red and white chessmen that take her on a journey across the chessboard. Carroll admits taking some liberties with the game, and while the game itself might be somewhat abstract, it does follow the rules of a traditional game of chess. Chess Grand Master Ossip Bernstein was nearly executed by the Bolshevik secret police until a commanding officer let him play a game of chess to save his own life. In 1918, Bernstein found himself arrested by the Bolshevik secret police whose purpose was to investigate and punish “counterrevolutionary” crimes. As the firing squad lined up before him, a senior officer and chess enthusiast recognized Bernstein’s name. He offered Bernstein a deal. They would play a game of chess and if Bernstein won he would win his life and freedom. However, if he lost (or the game came to a draw), he would get shot along with the rest of the prisoners. Bernstein won easily and was released. It is possible, though unlikely, to checkmate an opponent in only two moves. There are eight different ways to Mate in two moves from the starting position; however there are 355 different ways to Mate in three moves. It is worth noting that an average game lasts 38 moves.U.S. Chess Master Bobby Fischer was issued an arrest warrant for playing a chess match in Yugoslavia. In 1992, Fischer was charged in violating economic sanctions against the former country of Yugoslavia. He came out of retirement to earn $5 million in a rematch against Boris Spassky, the former world champion and his old nemesis. Fischer would never return to the U.S. and ultimately settled (and later died) in Reykjavik after renouncing his American citizenship.Mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing developed the first computer program for playing chess in 1952. However, no computer was powerful enough at the time to process the program. Turing “ran” the program manually on a piece of paper taking several minutes per move. In 1997, chess world champion Garry Kasparov lost to the IBM supercomputer known as Deep Blue because of a bug in the software. Kasparov, as well as other chess masters, blamed the defeat on a single move made by the IBM machine in the 44th turn. The computer made a sacrifice that seemed to hint at its long-term strategy. This spooked Kasparov who attributed the move to Deep Blue’s “superior intelligence.” It was later revealed that this move was simply a glitch in the software. The actors memorized and played all the chess games on Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit”. Netflix’s adaptation of “The Queen’s Gambit,” from Walter Tevis’s novel of the same name was released in 2020. The limited series starred Anya Taylor-Joy as chess prodigy Beth Harmon. Chess consultants Garry Kasparov and Bruce Pandolfini created every game for the series. The actors learned and played every move of each game whether the game was shown on-screen or not including the speed chess games. Heather Ledger was working on a film adaptation of “The Queen’s Gambit” prior to his death in 2008. Ledger was an accomplished chess player and planned to direct and star in alongside Elliot Page, who would’ve played Beth.

https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/clemenz-opening-and-a-risky-gamble-on-moves?cid=62972971&page=1#comment-62972971I saw someone mention Crab Opening and decided to attempt one. I didn't know how this would work so it was a new attempt. I decided to move into a varied one after seeing some examples of the generic type and attempted a new strategy. I moved one pawn to one square and on the other end moved the other pawn to double spaces. After the game, I analyzed the game and found that this was called Clemenz opening and its success rate is at 36% for White and 49% for Black according to the Chess site records.Have a look at my game and do try to replicate this and find more answers with the same moves or less. I may have been lucky to get a weak opponent but I play every game as it was my first and last. Was I lucky?Did my opponent make rational decisions?Did I make rational decisions? How could I play this better?Comment below and post all variations of the original Clemenz opening and comparisons of variations also. Also, post your take on it.I am happy to learn from my mistakes. So please show me how I can be better.

“Chess is like body building. If you train every day, you stay in top shape. It is the same with your brain. Chess is a matter of daily training.” These are the words of Vladimir Kramnik, Russian Chess Grandmaster who describes the passion essential for winning. Brain stimulator and intriguing as well this game displays closest resemblance to life. The player has to make a move no matter what, he has to struggle throughout the three phases of this game like the opening, the middlegame and the endgame with new strategies to win the game in the end. Similarly in life we have to keep on struggling and making suitable decisions to be successful in the end. Today’s topic is a bit unusual. I will not talk about strategy, tactics, endgames, middle games, psychology and any other chess related things. However I will still talk about chess. Here are some facts about the game of chess which not many non chess players may be aware of. These are little, fundamental ideas behind the game of chess, from the chess history to the longest game possible. This chess information should help you to improve your teory of the game. So, 40 facts about chess: 1. The number of possible unique chess games is much greater than the number of electrons in the universe. The number of electrons is estimated to be about 10^79, while the number of unique chess games is 10^120. 2. The longest chess game theoretically possible is 5,949 moves. 3. British masters Harry Golombek, Stuart Milner-Barry and H. O’D. Alexander was on the team which broke the Nazi Enigma code. Clarification: The Polish scientists Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski, Jerzy Rozyckibroke the pre-war Enigma code machines, in 1932. Then after the war broke out, the Polish sent the information they’d learned to the British ( chess masters Harry Golombek, Stuart Milner-Barry and H. O’D. Alexander) who then deciphered the new German war Enigma machines. 16. During the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match in Rekjavik, the Russians linked Spassky’s erratic play with Fischer’s chair. The Icelandic organization put a 24-hour Police guard around the chair while chemical and x-ray tests were performed on the chair. Nothing unusual was found. 17. The first mechanical Chess Clock was invented by Thomas Wilson in 1883. Prior to that, Sandglasses were used. Sandglasses were first used in London in 1862. The present day push-button Clock was first perfected by Veenhoff in 1900. 18. The folding Chess board was originally invented in 1125 by a Chess-playing priest. Frank Marshall (1877-1944) was the first American to defeat a Soviet player in an international tournament in New York, 1924. He reigned as U.S. Champion for 30 years, but only defended his title once when he defeated Ed Lasker (5-4) in 1923. He was the first master to play more than 100 games simultaneously. 21. In 1985, Eric Knoppert played 500 games of 10-minute Chess in 68 hours. 22. Albert Einstein was a good friend of World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker. When I get through work I don’t want anything which requires the working of the mind.” He did take up Chess in his later life. 23. There were 72 consecutive Queen moves in the Mason-Mackenzie game at London in 1882. 24. The record of moves without capture is of 100 moves during the Match between Thorton and M. Walker in 1992. 25. Rookies or, players in their first year, are named after the Rook in Chess. Rooks generally are the last pieces to be moved into action, and the same goes for Rookies. 26. A Computer Program named Deep Thoughtbeat an International Grand Master for the first time in November 1988 in Long Beach, California. 27. Blindfold chess is an impressive skill that many stronger chess players possess. It certainly requires a keen ability to see the board clearly, which can get difficult after many moves. The record was set in 1960 in Budapest by Hungarian Janos Flesch, who played 52 opponents simultaneously while blindfolded – he won 31 of those games. 28. There are well over 1,000 different openings, including variations within larger openings/defenses that one can learn. 29. Chess is often cited by psychologists as an effective way to improve memory function. Also allowing the mind to solve complex problems and work through ideas, it is no wonder that chess is recommended in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Some contend that it can increase one’s intelligence, though that is a more complex topic. The effects of chess on young individuals had led to chess being introduced in school districts and various countries. It has been shown to improve children’s grades and other positive effects as well. 30. FIDE stands for Fédération Internationale des Échecs, which literally translates into World Chess Federation. 31. The second book ever printed in the English language was about chess! 32. However, no computer was powerful enough to process it, so Turing tested it by doing the calculations himself and playing according to the results, taking several minutes per move. 33. The oldest recorded chess game in history is from the 900s, between a historian from Baghdad and his student. 34. The oldest surviving complete chess sets were found on the Isle of Lewis, in northern Scotland, and dates to the 12th century. They were probably made in Iceland or Norway, and their appearance was used in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for the wizard chess pieces. 35. About 600,000,000 (Six hundred million) people know how to play chess worldwide! 36. In many languages, the Pawn is a foot soldier, but in German and Spanish, it’s a peasant or farmer, instead! 37. The reason why traditional chess pieces don’t look like actual soldiers, bishops, and kings is because before the game reached Europe, it passed through the Islamic world. Islam forbids making statues of animals or people, so chess pieces became vague-looking. When the game spread to Christian Europe, the pieces didn’t change much. 38. Chess began in India during the Gupta Empire, spreading to the Persian Sassanid Empire, and then to the Middle East after Muslims conquered Persia. From there, it spread to Europe and Russia. 39. Initially, the Queen could only move one square at a time, diagonally. Later, she could move two squares at a time, diagonally. It wasn’t until Reconquista Spain, with its powerful queen Isabella, that the Queen became the strongest piece on the board. 40. In Shatranj, the predecessor to chess, the Queen was a minister or vizier, and still is in many languages.

Nakamura swaps barbs with Carlsen after 27-game unbeaten run Hikaru Nakamura, the five-time US champion, has a flourishing online presence with more than a million followers to his Twitch stream, where he demonstrates his high-level skills while passing on expressively phrased nuggets of wisdom. At age 33, Nakamura’s hopes for the classical world title are remote, and he now rarely plays one game a day tournaments. His supremacy is geared to speed games, where he and the world No 1, Magnus Carlsen, have stratospheric ratings around the 2900 mark. Nakamura is a deadly performer at time rates ranging from 25-minute rapid right down to online ultrabullet, where each player has 15 seconds for the entire game. Last weekend at the St Louis Grand Tour he was unbeaten in 27 games of rapid and blitz, and was sure of the $37,500 first prize with three rounds to spare. 3777 Yu Yangyi v Dennis Khismatullin, Moscow Aeroflot 2017. Black to move and win. Black is clearly better, but the obvious 1...Bxh1 is a false trail due to 2 Rxd6!His magic ingredient is his exceptionally quick reactions to rapidly changing situations on the board, plus the dexterity, control and instant hand-brain coordination needed to make long sequences of correct moves with just two or three seconds increment on the clock. At the end Carlsen sent a barbed congratulatory tweet to the “World No 2 rapid and blitz player”, a reference to how the Norwegian’s rival had started St Louis as No 1 in the blitz rankings, but had slipped back due to his draws. Nakamura missed a late chance in the final round to regain top spot, then referred to Carlsen’s comment as “some ridiculous tweet”. One day later Nakamura produced an impressive reply to the taunt by becoming the first player ever to win Chess.com’s highly competitive Titled Tuesday, in which more than 500 master players compete every week, with an 11/11 maximum. There is a long standing needle between the pair, dating back to a decade ago when Nakamura referred to Carlsen as “Sauron”. In Moscow 2010 at the conclusion of the World Blitz, they got together and played a late night informal 40-game match well into the small hours, as recounted by Macauley Peterson for Chess Life magazine. Could they now agree on a return one-to-one series, this time in public and with Carlsen’s world blitz title at stake? As a highly watchable event, it would be sure to attract a huge audience of online viewers and would be a natural for major sponsors. The last official Fide world blitz championship was at Moscow in 2019, when Carlsen won and Nakamura was runner-up, confirming their superiority shown by the rankings. So far no renewal of the championship tournament has been announced for 2021, and in its absence a match between the two would be a very credible substitute. The $325,000 Sinquefield Cup at St Louis is the most important event in US chess. Its 2014 renewal featured a historic achievement when Fabiano Caruana won his first seven games and drew the rest for a 3103 performance rating. It was the highest ever in a single tournament, eclipsing Carlsen’s 3002 at Pearl Spring 2009 and Anatoly Karpov’s 2978 at Linares 1994, and comparable to Bobby Fischer’s 20-game winning run in 1970-71, made before performance ratings were officially calculated. Caruana, the current world No 2 and a St Louis resident, is again the Sinquefield Cup favourite, helped by the absence of major rivals Anish Giri, Levon Aronian and Alexander Grischuk who were unable to reach the US due to travel and/or visa problems. In Tuesday’s opening round Caruana gave notice of his intentions by defeating Sam Shankland, the 2018 US champion, in a classic attacking game complete with the queen sacrifice 28 Ng4! However, it was another game from round one which should be of most interest to players who like to be up to date with the latest opening ideas. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Peter Svidler are both specialists in the Grunfeld 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5, so their game began 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 and now 3 h4!? the trendy advance of Harry the h-pawn which has been gaining popularity in recent events. Svidler replied 3...Bg7 4 Nc3 0-0 (d6 5 e4 Nc6!? was Carlsen’s choice in his World Cup brilliancy against Vladimir Fedoseev) 5 e4 d6 6 Be2 c5 7 d5 and now Svidler chose the Benko Gambit style 7...b5?! which is a logical counter to White’s early attack on the other flank. Vachier-Lagrave eventually won in style with the key move 25 b4! but only after Black missed chances. The Sinquefield Cup is viewable daily until 26 August (rest day Sunday 22 August) , live and free with grandmaster commentary, at kasparovchess.com (9pm start). After three rounds (of nine) of the Sinquefield Cup, Caruana and Wesley So (both US) and Vachier-Lagrave (France) lead on 2.5 points. Over-the-board chess in England is reviving well from the pandemic, despite venue problems and arguments over wearing masks during play. The 10-12 September 4NCL congress at Leamington Spa, where entries have already topped 100, offers a half-point bye option to mask wearers who are paired against unmasked opponents. Next week’s Northumbria Masters at the Marriott Metrocentre in Gateshead expects a full house of nearly 200 players headed by GMs and IMs, while the Wood Green Invitational at Stafford which started on Thursday evening also gives young talents the chance to qualify for international titles. Online chess remains the preferred choice for many. English Chess Federation membership opens the door for internet players of all standards from strong to weak to take part in individual and team national, and even international, contests. 3777 1...Rg1+! 2 Kxg1 Ne2+ 3 Kf1 Ng3+ and 4....Nxf5 wins.

1) The longest game of chess that is possible is of 5,949 moves. 2) The longest game lasted for 269 moves and ended in a draw. 3) The word “checkmate” comes from the Arabic word “shah mat” which translates to “The king is dead” in English. 4) The new move where the pawn could move two steps instead of one was introduced in Spain in 1280. 5) A German named Dr. Emanuel Lasker retained the Champion title for the most time: 26 years and 337 days! 6) The modern chess board as we see it today appeared first in Europe in 1090. 7) The first mechanical clock to be used instead of sand glass was invented by Thomas Wilson in 1883. The modern push button clock was introduced by Veenhoff in 1900. 8) The folding Chess board was invented in 1125 by a Chess-playing priest. Since the Church forbids priests to play Chess, he hid his Chessboard by making it look like two books lying together. 9) Players in their first year are called “Rookies”. This name came up from the last pieces of chess to move into action called “Rooks”. 10) Alan Turing developed the first computer program for playing chess was developed in 1951. However, no computer was powerful enough to process it, so Turing tested it by doing the calculations himself and playing according to the results, taking several minutes per move.
