What do you think of this crazy gambit?

Personaly I`m still sckeptical

White needs a lot of theory in order to play it as well as extraordinary tactical vision to capitalize on deviations.  Gonnosuke has those abilities, but for the rest of us mortals, it will completely destroy us.

It's great fun!  White gets a killer attack, which usually wins if you know the theory, but your opponent does not.

if black can stay out of storm of exchanges, the position could be an advantage. otherwise, say "uncle" now.

Here's a link to the Unorthodox Opening Newsletter that focused on the Halloween Gambit:

Great stuff in there.

I love the gambit.

Unfortunately, I play the King's Gambit, so I have almost no chances to play the Halloween.

I uploaded some games in PGN format to the 'downloads' section.  They are from the Chessville website.

The download is here:

I agree.  It's especially the case with the Halloween Gambit because it looks, at first glance, to be very unsound.  It's not until you've been on the receiving end of some white piece wizardry that you realize there's more to it than meets the eye.

Concerning the UCO guide to the gambit -- it's a good primer but it's starting to show it's age as there have been many improvements in many lines since it was first published.  Just an fyi.

How about the theory in the UON #13.  Would you say that was out of date as well?

Cool.  I'll look into it some more and try to run some engine tournaments on the new lines.

The Halloween Gambit is awesome. I play it whenever I get the chance to do so. If you like this gambit click here to join a tournament for it.Smile

I think too slow for a gambit. Because the gambits, which sacrifice a material, are very fast games. But this game is slow.

Sorry, I meant to write UON rather than UCO.  I've corrected the original post.

Thanks for clarifying Alex!

Boog, if you think it would be helpful I can send you a couple of Halloween opening books (ctg) that I created from various HG games.

Can you send one to me? I am interested in trying it out in some centaur games.
