Is it cheating?
Yes.
HERE IS A LINK TO CHESS.COMS policy on cheating by Erik.
The latest thread which boldly and tastefully includes a list of caught cheaters from this site. It is worth your time to read.

did you two read Eriks thread? Cant believe all the names on the list at the end of the thread..... and grumpy Baby you were not on it
I remember playing on chesscube.com one time seeking an unrated game, them this low rated player comes up, and I figure it'll be an easy win. At first I was surprised on his theory knowledge, and the he just trashed me. I'm talking about a guy equivalent to about 700 rated on this site! It was an unrated game though, so it wasnt all bad. But still, playing against computer oponnets are extremely annoying, and completely unfair.
@ Tryst ....I was holding my breath hoping that my attack would not be discovered. Im so hooked lol
I didnt know how exactly how they worked. I dont get the "program your own piece". Whats that about?
@ Nazgul (I still want the house and the lands honey you cant hold out forever)
I dont understand this..what is this engine stuff?
This is interesting ... I don't know very well the computer chess world but i understand the following :
1) A chess computer programmer as to respect copyright when a human call it learning from a teacher or mentor .
2) If the copy of a software beat the original it is cheating (I call that an up-grade !)
3) There is actually people spending there time studying codes to know if they were copy of others one and judging if it's legal or not !
Well, I still don't get the point of all of that ! I wish F. Kafka were still here to explain it to me ! It looks like a waste of time and energy when actually we are talking about a machine playing a game !!! I do think that every software should be free to be copy and improoved.
Another cheater in Germany
using a smart phone and a computer program
well that is amazing to me

"why would someone cheat?" that's everyones argument. The answer is simple enough -- to win. Why? I don't know, because they don't like losing I guess, I know I don't. I don't cheat (believe what you will), I only play blitz games fast enough to prevent that kind of cheating to any reasonable extent. But I mean, look at someone whose standard rating is 2304 but their tactics trainer rating is only 1800 with over 30000 attempts??? I mean, could that be any more obvious? It just seems obvious to me that there are cheaters out there, and more than you would think.

If anyone has not looked at this list created by chess.com..Its a real eye opener and I invite you to browse it.....Cheating to the Max!

@ JCarter1....you make an excellant point about playing with the other player. I hope that some of the more versed members correct what I say here. I think the point they are trying to make is that a chess engine kind of works like the game review and planner function that is here on chess.com ( by the way its wonderful darling, if you have not used it i think you should
)
Not that the engine decides for you but it presents with options and you decide.Im not explaining it well enough but that is the idea. If it is not making the final decision and that is from your brain. Is it cheating?
