One thing I check is their number of friends... people with 500+ friends and almost no "points" (meaning they don't post in clubs or blogs or on the forums) I think are spamming friend requests to strangers collect "friends." I always decline those.
Friend Requests

Like the OP, I wonder if you'd want to "friend" me if you knew how old I am (as in, I'm as old as your parents)... but sure, I try not to decline friend requests.

How ironic.
I've had some friend requests recently from people that have come "out of the blue". They are names I have never heard, players I've never played, people I've never chatted with or seen in the forums. There is usually no picture or information on their homepage, and if there is, it would lead you to believe it is a young female. Just a wild hunch, but I'm guessing that if they knew I was actually 76 years old, they would be less interested in "friendship"....or whatever it is they are interested in.
So, chances are I will continue to decline such requests. This, of course, does not apply to people I've played against or have chatted with and have gotten to know on some level.
I've had the same thing happen to me. I never accept a friend request from someone who I don't know exists... it's just too weird.
@mikekalish
Those people trying to friend you are most likely just bots trying to get achievements, then when they get enough achievements they'll probably try to sell the account to whoever wants it, for some reason.
Also, off-topic, but I love the picture! It's great that you still have that. Also way to go mate, I strive to play chess as well as you when I'm 76 years old.

@mikekalish has been on my friends’ list since before I started hanging around the forum page. A nicer and kinder gentleman you could NOT find.🤗😇

People sell accounts? Really?
Happens to me. I also get daily game invites from people I don't know, but that works out ok but I wonder why they challenge me.
