Bamboo? Could it be used for chessboards?

Hello everyone out there in chess.com land. I have been watching a lot of videos on Bamboo. Wow some of those giant timber Bamboos are huge. Anyways I do know that good quality Go boards are made out of Bamboo. Just wondering why chessboards are not made out of this grass timber? Hardwood flooring companies offer Bamboo flooring. I know that Bamboo is hollow but can be made into plywood form. Seems like something that can be used as veneered option? What are your thoughts about Bamboo.

I think it's a great idea.

Here's a Bamboo Go board. I think that if they could silk screen in a dye or stain for the dark squares. This would make for a fine looking chess board. Stronger than solid wooden boards.

I was actually thinking of bamboo for the light squares and something else such as walnut for the dark squares.

KnightsForkCafe

Yeah that would be cool as well. Seeing Go stone bowls. You can also make pieces as well. I know that it is a hard wood and turning it is tougher but not impossible. It would be kind of cool to see something different for chess equipment.

Love all the ideas above. Bamboo board and/or pieces would be cool. I love the silk screened dark squares idea. That would look slick.

Chess House currently has a bamboo board available:

$500 seems like a lot for that board.
KnightsForkCafe

Yeah $500 is unrealistic. The bamboo is only the frame.

EthanJojy

$500 dollars is enough to buy a car.

Here's another bamboo board from Chess USA https://www.chessusa.com/product/30-327.html

$40 is closer to what I'd expect for bamboo -- it's supposed to be a sustainable crop, on top of everything else.

It looks like there's a lot of hits for bamboo chess boards made in China on sellers like Alibaba. Maybe it's just not caught on yet outside of Asia.

Bamboo does have a stigma attached to it. It's the poor man's timber. Bamboo is such a versatile plant. Bedding, clothes, furniture, etc.. are all made from Bamboo. It reaches its maturity in one or two grow seasons. Very renewable and green eco friendly. This house made out of it looks amazing!

Either the description is wrong. Or the product image is wrong. Because that image 100% is NOT bamboo.

That is a great idea. I have an awesome bamboo Go board and it is SOLID. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny!

I agree.  I wouldn't pay that.  Just wanted to show that they are out there if people want them.

Sure thing. I didn’t know it existed either. I just happened to stumble upon it after seeing this thread.

Bamboo backs on Mahjong tiles. Recently purchased this vintage Riichi Mahjong set from ebay. Would love to see bamboo used for chess equipment. Hint, Hint!
