Nice! I considered buying this set last year, but I don't have any 45mm field size board and too few sets that would warrant a purchase (so far). Looks much nicer in the "flesh" than on the company's photos.
Thanks. If you're going to get one @sound67, it appears CB on etsy has the best deal.
BTW, Bruce, the designer of Canadian Staunton, wanted the chess pieces sized so that they would not appear crowded on 2 ¼" squares chess board. In reality, the pieces look like they are swimming on2 ¼" squares board. But on 2" squares (50mm), they look surprisingly great.
Late last year I happened to stumble upon an interesting DIY article written by a Canadian craftsmen named Bruce Campbell who described in painstaking detail the steps involved in turning a wooden chess set (here is the link). What immediately caught my attention was how Bruce had designed the pieces so that they would look and feel good, but also 'playable'. He even varied the height of the pieces and made the rook as tall as the knight to reflect their value in the game. It was a Staunton but not like any Staunton.
I thought about writing to Bruce but the article was written way back in 2008 and I didn't know if he'd take orders. After some googl'ing, however, I found out that Chess Bazaar was already selling them... and at a very reasonable price. Well, it was a no-brainer so I promptly placed an order. Here are some photos I took this afternoon.
