Hi, just found this Chavet set on Ebay. It's just the pieces and box not the board.

Says B202 on box.

What do you think?

He's taking offers so I've offered the asking price lol which seller will probably not take as he's only just listed it and probably wanting more so I'll just keep an eye on it.

Am I right in thinking that B202 is quite a small set also in one of the photos, photo no4 I think, the one with the 2 kings does the white king look damaged or are those just swirls in the wood do you think?

Beautiful set!  I don't think the white king is damaged at all.  The previous photo that included  some pawns show some swirls as well.

B202 is 7cm KH, easily to hide from your hubby haha uhm, I think it's swirls not some damage.

Thank you. There's very little info out there on Chavet sets when you Google!

Already have cunning plan in hand to have it coincide with an order of boxed coffee that hubby wants me to order 😋.

This swirls are typical of the french boxwood which has a very contrasted grain.

That's a nice set. It looks good to me. It comes with a box with the older logo, label, and reference number which are nice. Just be aware the set is no felted and is no weighted. The wood is very dense so the pieces shouldn't be as light as other types of wood. Personally, I like unweighted sets. The pieces not being felted is ok if you intend to use the set on a non-wood board. If you use it on a wood board just don't be more careful moving the pieces. Like Michael and @Jacmater said the swirls look normal. Good luck with the auction.

I don't know, those three perpendicular marks on the White King look suspicious to me.

Be aware, this seller is not a usual chess equipment seller. He may not know to indicate damage that would matter to a chess player/collector. Leaning pieces, natural cracks in the wood, major knots, and careless damage. But hey, this being a vintage Chavet set,,, it's to be expected! Hah.

Ask the seller any and all questions until you are satisfied.

MC, thanks for the heads up about the possibility of scratches to a wooden board. As it's a small set what board would you recommend? I do have one of those silicon boards but it's quite big so pieces would look a bit lost on it.

Pawn, yes I'm not totally convinced it's not damage. The bottom one looks particularly suspicious.

I did mail the seller and ask and she told me there was no damage to the set but as you say she may not see it as damage.

QueenClaudia2003

What's the date of the set by the way?

I believe the B202 king base is 35 mm based upon other listings. That would be a 1.75" or 44 mm square should work. As for the date, I don't know these small sets as well as the larger size 6. Also, it is hard to tell the design from the photos. Based upon the queen, I believe it could be 80s to 90s.

I say it's a nice addition and definitely worthy of a Queen.....Hubby should get it for you.-happy.png

Thanks for the info on size of pieces and date.

Even though hubby has a collection of 7 expensive electric guitars he can't understand why one chess set is not enough. Strange that!

Someone's put a bid on the set now but will still keep an eye on it. I'm also trying to learn more about these sets as well.

There is another Chavet set No4 I've been nosing at and the seller noticed I'd been nosing too as he sent me an offer on it of £80. He has it for sale on eBay at £100. It also includes a board.

Would be interested in everyone's thoughts on it? 🙂.

I'm pretty sure that's a Lardy set but in Chavet slide box. Unless the owner can prove that's how he bought it from a store, I'd stay away from it.

QueenClaudia2003

Oh really!

Is it the knights? Just interested how you can tell so I can learn how to tell the differences.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes the knights. There is a piece on this site under French Staunton section http://www.chess-museum.com/staunton-style.html. You recognize a chavet knight right away when you see one. There is some mystery overlapping at some point between Lardy and Chavet. Lardy's bishop and rook that's typical Chavet and vice versa. But you can't miss about the knights.

Thanks for info and link will have a look.
