Chess Bag?

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for storing a chess board that I recently picked up from HOS. The dimensions are 21.25" by 21.25" when fully out. (It's a foldable tournament size one)

Are there any options of a bag that I could use? I would love to have this chess set that I bring to tournaments/events. I would have decided to purchase a bag from HOS, but I deem they are too expensive and I have heard quality issues about them.

Cheers,

Nick

I own a few of these boards.  I actually have the first one now for well over 10 years.

I have looked for a bag to hold these folding boards.  Legend Chess Products used to sell, and probably still sells, a folding wood board that had a case included.  I had one of those bags from a person that had his board destroyed.  That bag would work.  The problem is that Legend Chess doesn't sell the bag separately, and the board I am thinking of that has that bag costs a lot, something like $700.

To date the only bag that I have found to hold these boards is the HoS Deluxe Tournament bag.  I own 5 of these that I acquired over the years.  I also bought my last 2 in late 2015 when I picked up their folding Palisander and Walnut boards.

I have found no quality problems with those bags in the last 3 years.  And if I did, the service of HoS is excellent.  They would certainly make any problem right.

And I see their price is kind of high on those.

However, if you bought that folding board recently, give them a phone call on Monday.  They have the price reduced when you buy the bag with a board.  They also always have at least 10% off.  I know that if you ask them, they will give you a decent price.

Thanks for getting back so quickly, I appreciate your response.

See, that was the bag I was looking at, but I don't know if I want to spend the money for one. I was thinking of using a pizza bag that is used to delive pizzas, then add some additional padding to it. It would at least fit the dimensions of my board.

The quality problems that I have seen reported on the Chess.com forums are issues with the zippers. People have been reporting that the zippers are a bit stiff and hard to move back and forth. Someone said that you could always lubricate the zippers, which I may end up having to do if I go that route of buying the HOS bag.

I also had picked up this board recently. It came in the mail on Wednesday or Thursday of last week. Should I still be able to get that discount?

Cheers,

Nick

The zipper problem was with bags from a number of years ago.  None of the bags I own have any problems with the zippers.

The guys working at The House of Staunton are all very professional and nice.  They want the customer to be pleased and happy.  I say this from personal experience.

Call that main number, 256-858-8070 and press #3, this will get you to the guys that actually run the place.  I am confident that if you talk with any of them, you will have satisfaction.

The pizza bag sounds interesting.  Having the folding board simply makes it more convenient to take to tournaments.  Their bag has pockets and space for other tournament needs, like a clock and even 2 sets.  There's also the loop for a roll up board to bring as a back up, and of course there is room for other stuff.  The pizza bag seems limited in what you could carry in it.

As I said, I have looked everywhere for a bag to hold these wood folding boards.  And I have looked at bags that weren't designed to Chess stuff.  The size of the board makes it hard to find a bag to match it.  With the non-folding boards, I have gone to art supply stores and bought these big, flat bags designed to carry paintings and the like.  They work well for that.  Unfortunately there are really no good, rectangular bags to fit these folding boards.  So, I ended up waiting for sales and discounts and then buying this bag.

Good luck, and if you do find another bag let us know here.  And if you do get that HoS bag also let us know.  By the way, include pictures of your board and set.  That's always fun.
